Summary: We as God’s missionaries He wants us to go where God is neglected and our part as His mouthpiece is to introduce Him as God.
“Be a messenger of God”
Jonah 1:2 He said, "Go to Nineveh, that great city, and speak out against it; I am aware of how wicked its people are."
Introduction:
The Assyrian history, as far as it has yet been discovered, is very bare of events in regard to this period. We have as yet the names of three kings only for 150 years. But Assyria, as far as we know its history, was in its meridian. Just before the time of Jonah, perhaps ending in it, were the victorious reigns of Shalmanubar and Shamasiva; after him was that of Ivalush or Pul, the first aggressor upon Israel. It is clear that this was a time Of Assyrian greatness: since God calls it “that great city,” not in relation to its extent only, but its power. A large weak city would not have been called a “great city unto God”
Three things that God wants us to do as His missionary:
Body:
I. GOD WANTS HIS MISSIONARY TO GO WHERE HE IS NEGLECTED (v.2a)
a. It is a command
- “Go”
b. With specific place
- “Nineveh”
c. With complete description
- “Great city.”
II. GOD WANTS HIS MISSIONARY TO BE HIS MOUTHPIECE (v.2b)
a. He wants His servant to be Bold
- “Speak out”
b. He wants His servant to be in Truth
- “Against it.”
III. GOD WANTS HIS MISSIONARY TO INTRODUCE HIM AS GOD (v.2c)
a. He is Omnipresent God (always present)
- “I am aware of “
b. He is Omniscient God (He knows everything)
- “How wicked its people are.”
Conclusion:
We as God’s missionaries He wants us to go where God is neglected and our part as His mouthpiece and introduce Him as God.
