Summary: To be a man means that you will observe what the Lord requires, walk in the ways of the Lord, keep the laws of the Lord. Then, you will receive the promise of God.

I could preach just on this point of the need for a man to be disciplined in his interaction with women.

I know there may be some cynics in the congregation who would say that King David is old now and this is a pre Viagra era and therefore what he may want to do; he can’t do.

For those scriptural cynics, I’ll only say that it is a sad state of affairs when old men are going around winking and blinking when they should be somewhere in a bible study getting their life right with God.

King David shows discipline.

Discipline is a hallmark for a man. The ability to place your flesh in subjection to your spirit is strength.

The second thing that the 1 Kings illustrates for us is King David’s devotion to God.

Adonijah tries to take control of the Kingdom and set himself up as the king. He gets a few people to conspire with him. But, he is unable to get the majority.

He gets a few chariots and men; struts his stuff like he is now the king, but doesn’t tell King David.

Nathan the prophet and Bathsheba come to David and ask did David make Adonijah the king. They remind David of his words that the Lord told him that Solomon would be the one to replace him as the king.

King David is so devoted to God and his word that he immediately makes Solomon the King. Tells the people to blow the trumpet, bids him to sit on this throne, and transfers his power to Solomon.

King David in that act of devotion says to us that to be a man you must be devoted to God.

These two elements that David illustrates to us are foundational to being a man: discipline and devotion.

In our text today we now get to listen in on the conversation being David and his son, Solomon.

David tells him to show thyself a man.

In other words the most important thing for you to do as the King of Israel is for you to be a man.

He didn’t say that he should be a warrior.

He didn’t say for him to be a conqueror.

He didn’t say for him to be a philanderer.

He didn’t even say for him to be a kingly.

He said that the most important thing you can be is to be a man!

And he is talking about being a strong man.

Not a powerful man.

Not a pretty man.

Not a prestigious man.

But, he tells him to be a strong man.

What does he say and what is a strong man?

David tells him to be a strong man you will do three things:

you will observe,

you will walk,

and you will keep.

1. Observe what the Lord requires

2. Walk in the ways of the Lord

3. Keep the laws of the Lord

To be a man means that you will observe, you will walk and you will keep.

Then, you will receive the promise of God.
