Summary: We fight Guilt or we lose without even trying

Battle Ready

“Giant of Guilt”

Psalm 51:7-12

9-8-2019

Imagine if you will for a moment this morning; As King of your country you have power beyond your understanding.

In fact you can do so much and never be questioned because you are King and no one can question you.

The problem is that when there was an opportunity to do something, you knew it was wrong in God’s eyes but you wanted to do it anyway, you did it.

So you did the act and now you are faced with the consequences of your action.

I man is dead because you had a relationship with his wife and she became pregnant.

Only a few people knew the truth and time has passed until Nathan, the prophet of God, comes by to visit.

You have already dismissed the deed and as far as you are concerned it is in the past.

So much that when Nathan tells a story about a greedy man about a sheep the shepherd in you wells up and you declare judgment on the evil man, only to hear Nathan say 2 Samuel 12:7 “And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man….”

Guilty is the verdict and you did not even realize you were on trial.

Guilt that had been suppressed is now haunting your very days.

What do you do?

I. Discover The Truth

In Psalm 51:1-6 we discover some painful Truths about sin…

1. We discover we are under sins grip.

- That even as a King, David is still subject to God’s authority.

- AND if that is true for King David it is also true for me

2. Confessing our sin is necessary but is not sufficient alone

- Your Guilt needs restitution.

??? If there was a crime committed and you are now in court; is it enough that you confess to the crime and then it is all taken care of? NO!

Restoration must be made to have my name restored.

David now cries out to God for forgiveness and He already knows a price must be paid in order for restitution to be true.

Yet how do you pay for a life taken?

Who do you pay for a lie spoken?

How do you pay for and action done?

WE cannot, BUT God can. Vs. 1

II. David Identifies The Price Of Un-confessed Sin.

1. He is defiled - V 7

2. He lost his ability to hear the Lord and His goodness - V 8a

3. His health has been effected - V 8b

4. His name has been disgraced - V 9

5. He walks in life defeated - V 10

6. He has found life lonely without the Lord near - V 11

7. He without even realizing it has slumped into depression - V 12

III. The Remedy For Guilt

There may be a reason that guilt has clung so tightly to ones heart.

1. Our Conscience (The Holy Spirit) will not allow it to just be forgotten.

2. We desire to move forward and yet we cannot because SIN is keeping us from experiencing real victory.

Life is too short to live in constant guilt and feel like we cannot move on.

Realizing this is the first step into true victory.

A. If you are not saved there is only one remedy for quilt.

That is Christ.

He came to pay for my sin and yet many carry it around thinking it is their burden to bare.

NOT SO!!!

B. If you are a child of God (a Christian) then there is only one way through this mess we are in.

Confess!

Psalm 51:7-12

There may be a need for restitution but it starts with Christ.

Is there anyone else who is thankful for Calvary?

I thank the Lord for His saving Grace and His restoring power to the believer.

Conclusion:

As the Hymnal says:

Jesus Paid it all, all to Him I Owe,

Sin had left a crimson stain,

He washed it white as Snow

1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

The sad part about this is that David will never fully recover his good name, but that did not stop him from worshiping the Lord.

Man may remind you of your sin but God cannot and will not.

Praise HIS HOLY NAME!
