Bargaining With the Enemy

February 27, 2011 Evening Service

Immanuel Baptist Church, Wagoner, OK

Rick Boyne

Message Point: There is no reason to bargain with sin, since we are already victors in Jesus Christ.

Focus Passage: I Sam 11:1-15

Supplemental Passage: "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. (John 10:10 NASB)

No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it. (1 Corinthians 10:13 NASB)

I. The enemy convinces us there is no hope (lies to us)

a. alternative lifestyles, pre-marital sex, extra-marital affairs, gaming, partying, woman’s choice,

b. the snake lied to Eve and look at the mess we’re in!

II. We believe the enemy and offer a truce

a. Habits / addictions / attitudes / carnal ways that have taken you prisoner & you’ve surrendered to them believing you can’t win.

b. We continue to sin because we think there is nothing we can do about it. (porn, adultery, smoking, immorality, drug abuse, gambling,) We even give it a label like “sickness or illness” to make it easier to accept or tolerate.

III. The enemy accepts the truce, but only under horrendous conditions

a. Satan is willing to let us continue to “go to church” instead of “being the church”.

b. Our defeat is passed to our children (Numbers 14:18 visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation)

IV. HOWEVER: The enemy is defeated.

a. Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. (James 4:7 NASB)

b. But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. (Romans 8:37 NASB)

c. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world--our faith. (1 John 5:4 NASB)

Invitation: What are you willing to sacrifice to maintain a peaceable existence with the devil? Satan’s kingdom will not suffer at all, until the church rises up in a Holy fire of anger against Satan and his works.
