Deepen our understanding of the significance of baptism, the transformative power of the Holy Spirit, and how to live daily in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Introduction

Good morning, church family. Today we're diving into some deep waters, baptism waters, to be exact. We're going to explore the significance of baptism, the transformative power of the Holy Spirit in this sacrament, and the life-changing benefits we receive from it. We're also going to discuss how to live daily in the power of the Holy Spirit.

To kick-start our sermon, I'd like to share a quote from J. Vernon McGee. He once said, "In order to live a life of holiness, we must first receive new life from God - we must be born from above." I love this quote because it captures the essence of baptism and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

The Power of the Holy Spirit in Baptism

When we are baptized: we are not merely engaging in a symbolic ritual or a rite of passage within the Christian community. Instead, we are participating in a divine act of grace where the Holy Spirit comes into our lives in a special way, marking us as God's own and empowering us to live a life that reflects Christ.

The Spirit regenerates us: Titus 3:5 tells us that God "saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit." This regeneration is a spiritual rebirth, a transformation from spiritual death to life. It is the Holy Spirit that brings about this new birth, giving us a new heart and a new spirit within us.

The Spirit indwells us: The moment we receive Christ as our Savior, the Holy Spirit comes to live within us. This indwelling of the Spirit is a unique characteristic of New Testament believers and is a fulfillment of God's promise in Ezekiel 36:27, "And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules." The Spirit within us is our constant companion, guiding us, teaching us, and empowering us to live a life pleasing to God.

The Spirit seals us: Ephesians 1:13-14 tells us, "In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory." The sealing of the Spirit is God's mark of ownership on us, a guarantee that we belong to Him and that He will keep us until the day of redemption.

The Spirit equips us: When the Holy Spirit comes into our lives, He doesn't come empty-handed. He brings with Him spiritual gifts, special abilities that are to be used for the building up of the body of Christ and for the advancement of God's kingdom. These gifts vary from person to person, but they all come from the same Spirit who distributes them as He wills for the common good (1 Corinthians 12:4-7).
