Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
Encourages Christians to foster faithfulness in their families, fortify their homes through service, and form a God-centered family, following Joshua's example.
Greetings, dear brothers and sisters in Christ. It is a pleasure and a blessing to gather together in His name today. We are here, not by chance, but by the divine orchestration of our loving Father. And it is in this spirit of gratitude and reverence that we approach His holy word today.
Our focus for today's sermon is taken from the book of Joshua, chapter 24, verses 14-15. Let us read together:
"Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord."
These verses echo with a resounding call to commitment, a pledge of faithfulness, and a challenge to serve. It is a call that resonates across the ages, reaching us today in our homes, in our communities, and in our hearts. It is a call to foster faithfulness in our families, to fortify our homes through service, and to form a God-centered family.
As we contemplate these truths, let us remember the profound words of Paul David Tripp, who once said, "In the family, life is brought not only to our doorstep, but into our kitchens, bedrooms, and dens. In the family, life is happening all around us, and it begs to be questioned, evaluated, interpreted, and discussed. There is no more consistent, pregnant, dynamic forum for instruction about life than the family, because that is exactly what God designed the family to be, a learning community." Indeed, our families are so important when it comes to learning and community, which is what we’re going to be talking about today.
Our families are not just clusters of individuals living under the same roof. No, they are more than that. They are units of spiritual warriors, called to serve the Lord in sincerity and truth. They are training grounds for faithfulness and service to our Lord.
Now, let us bow our heads and hearts in prayer.
Dear Heavenly Father, we thank You for the privilege of gathering together in Your name. We thank You for Your word, which is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. As we ponder the truths in the book of Joshua today, we pray for Your Holy Spirit to illuminate our minds and hearts. May we learn to foster faithfulness in our families, fortify our homes through service, and form a God-centered family. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Let us now proceed, not as a mere gathering, but as a family united in Christ, ready to heed the call of Joshua, ready to say, "As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."
The family unit is a divine institution, established by God Himself. It is within this sacred circle that we first learn about love, trust, and faith. It is here that we first encounter the notions of loyalty and commitment. It is here that the seeds of faithfulness are sown and nurtured.
Faithfulness is not a trait that we are born with: It is a virtue that is cultivated over time, through consistent practice and intentional effort. It is a quality that is modeled and taught, primarily within the family. Parents have a unique and irreplaceable role in fostering faithfulness in their children. They do this by living out their faith authentically and consistently, by teaching their children the truths of God's word, and by guiding them in the ways of righteousness.
Committed parents: The Scripture we read from Joshua presents us with a powerful example of a parent who was committed to fostering faithfulness in his family. Joshua made a clear and unequivocal declaration of his family's commitment to serve the Lord. This was not a casual statement, but a deliberate and determined pledge. It was a declaration that was rooted in a deep and abiding faith in God.
Joshua's declaration was not made in a vacuum: It was made in the context of a society that was steeped in idolatry and unfaithfulness. The gods of the Amorites were a constant temptation, luring the people away from the worship of the true God. Yet, in the midst of this spiritual crisis, Joshua stood firm. He chose to serve the Lord and to lead his family in doing the same.
This choice was not a mere personal preference: It was a decision that was grounded in a profound understanding of who God is and what He has done. Joshua knew the Lord as the one true God, the Creator of heaven and earth, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He had witnessed God's mighty acts of deliverance and provision. He had experienced God's faithfulness firsthand. And it was this knowledge and experience that fueled his commitment to serve the Lord and to foster faithfulness in his family.
Not a task for the faint-hearted: It requires courage, determination, and perseverance. It requires a willingness to swim against the tide, to stand against the crowd, to choose the narrow path. It requires a commitment to live out our faith in the daily grind of life, in the mundane and the ordinary, in the joys and the sorrows.
This task is not a burden, but a privilege: It is a sacred trust, a divine assignment. It is an opportunity to shape the next generation, to pass on the baton of faith, to leave a spiritual legacy. It is an opportunity to reflect the faithfulness of our Heavenly Father, to mirror His steadfast love and unchanging character.
Not a task that we undertake alone: We have the assurance of God's presence with us, His strength in us, His wisdom for us. We have the promise of His Spirit to guide us, His word to instruct us, His grace to sustain us. We have the example of godly men and women, like Joshua, who have gone before us, showing us the way.
As we turn our thoughts towards the idea of fortifying our families through service, we find ourselves standing on the solid ground of Scripture ... View this full PRO sermon free with PRO
