Summary: How the chruch and us as christians have fallen asleep.
Are you Sleepy
Did you get any sleep last night?
I pray I won’t put you to sleep today!!!!
Are you sleepy,
Prov 6:10-11
10 A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest--
11 and poverty will come on you like a bandit
and scarcity like an armed man.
NIV
Prov 20:13
13 Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.
KJV
The bible teaches us that sleep, leads to poverty, it leads to being with out that with what you need to survive, comfortably
Of course this is talking about a lifestyle of sleep or laziness ect not your normal night’s sleep.
Think about it sleep leads to poverty.
Poverty is being without the basic necessities to live a comfortable life.
Where does that leave us spiritually for those who slumber with their spiritual lives.
It leads to spiritual poverty,
When we slack, slumber, sleep or we are just plain lazy spiritually we end up in spiritual poverty and we don’t even have the basic necessities of strength and faith to live a comfortable life.
Mark 14:37-38
37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Simon," he said to Peter, "are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."
NIV
The bible also refers to sleep as death
Acts 20:9
9 Seated in a window was a young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on. When he was sound asleep, he fell to the ground from the third story and was picked up dead.
This guys sleep lead to death.
Acts 7:59-60
59 While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." 60 Then he fell on his knees and cried out, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." When he had said this, he fell asleep.
NIV
Acts 13:36-37
6 "For when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his fathers and his body decayed. 37 But the one whom God raised from the dead did not see decay
NIV
You see we need to be careful not to be to sleepy
Think about the church today.
Where’s the power
Where’s the power in your own life to defeat the enemy
How come you give in to temptation
Why do you fall
Because your asleep
Mark 14:37-38
37 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Simon," he said to Peter, "are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? 38 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."
NIV
We must watch and pray continually
Most of us are just like peter
We call ourselves disciples of Jesus, yet just like Peter we fall asleep, we can not even pray or watch for one hour. And because of that we are overcome by temptation.
Just like peter we deny Jesus with our words and with our actions remember how Peter denied the Lord with his words and then even with cursing and gesturing (with his actions)
Most of us can model the bad things of Peter pretty easy.
And that is exactly what we have done that is exactly what the church has done we’ve fallen asleep.
It’s time to wake up it’s time to pray up, just like the church use to they prayed and things happened they prayed and chains fell off, prisoners where set free, the blind regained sight and the lame walked
What will it take for us to wake up
Acts 12
1-7
you see that the church prayed and the chains fell off
do you see that the church prayed an Peter Sleep. Wake up friends
do we have to be struck by an angle like Peter
that’s what some of us need right now to be hit with a big Angle stick
Slumber produces poverty
Wake up spiritually and allow God to use you the way he desires
