Are We DEAD to Sin?

Romans 6:1-14

6 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with,[a] that we should no longer be slaves to sin— 7 because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.

8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10 The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.

11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. 14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.

We have been given so many great gifts from our Heavenly Father; we will never truly be able to grasp the depth and width of His Love for us…. That’s the truth.

I want to make it clear right off the bat this morning, that everything that we claim that we can do with God’s help…is because of Jesus living in us… it is not how good, or how strong we are within ourselves…. Jesus through the Holy Spirit is the reason we can live in Victory.

This morning, I’m going to give you the Answer right off the bat, then I’ll tell you why it’s true…

The answer is… Yes, we can be FREE from Sin and Live in Victory, no longer a slave to sin! Do you believe that? Are you experiencing that victory is the question?

So let’s see what Romans 6 says about the question of Can a person be Free from Sin… Free from this sinning lifestyle?

6 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

Just for a little context, we have been studying Romans on Wednesday nights online, so let me quickly tell you how Paul has arrived to this argument in Chapter Six.

Ch. 1-2 Paul explains how all of humanity will be accountable to God, no one will be excused from the Judgement, because God has made Himself known and has provided a way to be saved, through the Cross… Through Jesus and his death and resurrection, we have a pathway to salvation if we choose to accept it.

Ch 3-4 Paul reminds us that no one is Righteous on their own merit… in other words, none of us are good enough to meet the requirement of Holiness that God demands, we can only meet this requirement when we accept Jesus… and He becomes our Righteousness…He alone Justifies us and literally moves us from a place of Condemnation to a place of Forgiven, at peace with God. Aren’t you glad for that?

Ch. 5 Paul tells us that before we accept Christ, while we are living in sin…we are actually enemies of God because of our sin…but when we accept Christ, Christ living in us moves us to a place of Peace and Hope with our Heavenly Father.

Throughout Chapters 1-5 we are painted a very important picture of who God is and what He thinks about Sin.
