Summary: Christ is superior to the angels

Hebrews 1:1-14

The Son is Superior to Angels

QUESTIONS ABOUT ANGELS?

What do angels look like? Do we have guardian angels? How many angels are there? What is an archangel? Is it possible to see an angel? Do I pray to angels? What about demons, are they real? How are they different? Will I someday be an angel?

HEBREWS 13:2

Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.

CITY OF ANGELS

Angels are created spirit beings.

1 Praise the Lord.

Praise the Lord from the heavens,

praise him in the heights above.

2 Praise him, all his angels,

praise him, all his heavenly hosts.

3 Praise him, sun and moon,

praise him, all you shining stars.

4 Praise him, you highest heavens

and you waters above the skies.

5 Let them praise the name of the Lord,

for he commanded and they were created.

PSALM 148

Why were angels created?

For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Colossians 1:16-17

Angels are NOT glorified human beings

4 what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?

5 You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.

Psalm 8:4-5

HEBREWS 2:14-16

Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. 16 For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’ descendants.

Angels are spirits. In the OT they occasionally reveal themselves in a human-like form for a specific purpose

See 2 Kings 6:8-18

EPHESIANS 6:12

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

ANGELS

HEBREWS 1:3-4

The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.

HEBREWS 1:5-6

For to which of the angels did God ever say,

“You are my Son;

And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says,

“Let all God’s angels worship him.

HEBREWS 1:8-9

But about the Son he says,

“Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever,

God, your God, has set you above your companions

by anointing you with the oil of joy.

HEBREWS 1:10 & 13

He also says,

“In the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth,

13 To which of the angels did God ever say,

“Sit at my right hand

HEBREWS 1:14

Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

JESUS VS. ANGELS HIS GREATNESS IS SEEN

IN HIS RELATIONSHIP TO THE UNIVERSE

HEIR OF ALL THINGS, CREATOR OF ALL, THINGS, UPHOLDS ALL THINGS

IN HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD

GODS’ SON, RADIANCE AND IMAGE OF GOD’S GLORY

IN HIS RELATIONSHIP TO MAN.

TOOK ON OUR SINS, SAT DOWN AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD

IN THE BOOK OF HEBREWS

He’s better than angels

He’s better than any man that’s ever lived

He’s a better high priest than has ever served

He offers a better covenant than man has ever known

He offers a better sacrifice than has ever been offered.

Jesus is better… than anything.

Angels are not eternal beings.

Then the Lord answered Job out of the storm. He said:

2“Who is this that darkens my counsel

with words without knowledge?

4 “Where were you when I laid the earth’ foundation? Tell me, if you understand.

5 Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!

6 On what were its footings set,

or who laid its cornerstone—

7 while the morning stars sang together

and all the angels shouted for joy?
