Explores finding hope, strength, and growth amidst life's storms through faith and trust in God, our ever-present refuge and help.

Introduction

Good morning, beloved family.

We gather here today under the loving gaze of our Heavenly Father. We are here to share, to learn, and to grow in His Word. We are here to find comfort and strength, to find an anchor in the storms of life, and to grow through the gales that buffet us.

Today, we turn to the book of Psalms, specifically Psalm 46:1-2. Let's take a moment to read these words together:

"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth gives way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea."

These words, written so long ago, still hold true today. They speak to us in our times of trouble, offering us a safe haven, a source of strength, and a beacon of hope.

G.K. Chesterton once said, "Hope means hoping when things are hopeless, or it is no virtue at all." And so, today, we look to find that hope, even when things seem hopeless. We seek to discover how our storms can stir our strength, how we can remain anchored amidst agitation, and how we can grow even as the gales around us rage on.

Let us pray:

Dear Heavenly Father, we come before You today, seeking Your wisdom and Your guidance. As we open Your Word, we ask that You open our hearts. Help us to understand Your message, to find hope in the storms, strength in the agitation, and growth in the gales. Fill us with Your love, Your peace, and Your strength, so that we may face whatever comes our way with courage and faith. This we ask in Jesus' name, Amen.

Let’s get started!

Storms Stir Strength

In the midst of life's tempests, we often find ourselves questioning our strength. We feel the wind whipping around us, the rain pelting down, and we wonder if we have what it takes to weather the storm. But it is in these moments, when the gales are at their strongest, that we discover a resilience within us we never knew we had.

Verse 2: The psalmist speaks of the earth giving way, of mountains falling into the sea. These are not gentle breezes or light showers. These are violent, earth-shattering storms. And yet, the psalmist does not fear. Why? Because God is their refuge and strength.

Where it comes from: This is not a strength that comes from the psalmist themselves. It is not a strength born of their own abilities or resources. It is a strength that comes from God. It is a strength that is stirred up by the storm.

Storms are not an indication of God's absence: They are an opportunity for His strength to be revealed. When the earth gives way and the mountains fall into the sea, it is not because God has abandoned us. On the contrary, it is in these moments of chaos and uncertainty that His presence is most powerfully felt.

The life of the Apostle Paul: In 2 Corinthians 12, Paul speaks of a "thorn in his flesh," a storm that buffeted him relentlessly. He pleaded with God to take it away, but God's response was not what he expected. God said, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness."

Paul's storm did not subside: But in the midst of it, he discovered a strength that was not his own. He discovered God's strength. And this strength was not just sufficient, it was perfect. It was exactly what Paul needed to endure his storm.

Storms do not deplete our strength, they stir it up: When we face trials and tribulations, we often feel drained, as if our energy and resolve are being sapped away. But the reality is that these challenges are not diminishing our strength, they are stirring it up.

Metaphor: Think of a cup of hot chocolate. When you first pour the powder into the cup, it settles at the bottom. But as you stir it, the chocolate mixes with the milk, creating a rich, delicious drink. The stirring does not deplete the chocolate, it brings it to life. In the same way, our storms do not deplete our strength, they stir it up. They bring to the surface the strength that God has placed within us. They reveal the depth of our resilience, the tenacity of our faith, and the power of our hope.

Storms do not just stir up our strength, they strengthen our faith: When we face challenges, our faith is tested. And just like gold refined in the fire, our faith becomes stronger and purer through these trials.

James 1:2-4: This tells us to "consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." Our storms, our trials, are not meant to break us. They are meant to build us. They are meant to strengthen our faith, to deepen our trust in God, and to draw us closer to Him.

Storms are not just about our individual strength: They are also about our collective strength. When we face storms, we are not alone. We are part of a community, a family of believers, who are there to support and encourage us. In Galatians 6:2, Paul tells us to "carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." When we face storms, we have a responsibility not just to endure them ourselves, but to help others endure them as well.
