Summary: An Antidote To Fear

Psalm 46 An Antidote To Fear God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

The Scenario

• personal troubles (v 1) • natural disasters (vs 2-3) • international conflicts (v 6)

The Song”!“Therefore will not we fear”

Reasons to rejoice are centred on our relationship with God

We Rejoice In :-

1. The Protection Of God (vs 1-3) God is :-

(a) our “refuge” – when we are vulnerable

Psalm 62:7-8 In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. 8 Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.

(b) our “strength” –when we are weak

2 Cor 12:9-10 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

(c) an “ever-present help” – when we are in trouble

Psalm 50:15 And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.

Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

2. The Presence Of God (vs 4-6) 5 God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.

The Place Of His Presence 5 God is in the midst of her;

The Promise Of His Presence she shall not be moved

The Power Of His Presence God shall help her,

The Peace Of His Presence and that right early

3. The Plan Of God (vs 8-10) “Come and see…”

(a) what God has done 8 Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations he hath made in the earth.

(b) what God is doing “he maketh wars to cease…” are set in a context not of gentle persuasion but of a world devastated and forcibly disarmed.(Derek Kidner)

(c) what God will do 10 Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.

The Source Of His Exaltation Be still, and know that I am God

Isa 63:5 And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and my fury, it upheld me.

The Force Of His Exaltation I will be exalted among the heathen

Phil 2:9-11 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The Course Of His Exaltation I will be exalted in the earth.

11 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

The Lord of hosts”– God is able to help The God of Jacob”– God is willing to help us
