Plan for: Thanksgiving | Advent | Christmas
God can use what you already have to help you overcome challenges, just like David used five smooth stones to defeat Goliath. By understanding David's approach, we can learn how to conquer the giants in our own lives.
Today, we're diving into the epic showdown between David and Goliath. We're gonna focus on those five smooth stones David used to take down Goliath and see how God can use what we've got.
Object Lesson: Bring out a sling and five smooth stones. Demonstrate how David might have used them.
[Read 1 Corinthians 12:4-11]
The Bible tells us that God's given each of us different gifts. The Holy Spirit helps us find and use these gifts to serve God and others.
In the David and Goliath story, David didn't waste time wishing he was someone else or had what they had. He used what he had: five smooth stones and a sling.
In the David and Goliath story, David didn't waste time wishing he was someone else or had what they had. He used what he had: five smooth stones and a sling.
[Read 1 Samuel 17:32-51a]
In this story, there are three big lessons about facing our giants. These lessons are super important for us as we figure out what God's calling us to do and how to use what we've got.
1. Ignore the Haters
When David said he was gonna fight Goliath, Saul and others doubted him because he was just a kid. But David didn't let their doubts stop him from doing what God called him to do.
2. Remember Your Wins
David was confident because he remembered how God had helped him as a shepherd, protecting him from wild animals. Remembering these wins gave David the confidence to face Goliath.
We've got to remember how God's helped us in the past. This gives us the confidence to face our present challenges.
David had the memory of God's help and victory. That's why he didn't need Saul's armor and relied on what he had.
3. You've Got What It Takes
David tried to wear armor, but it didn't fit. He realized he didn't need it. He just needed his five stones and sling.
We often try to be someone else, but we don't need to. We've got what it takes to serve God effectively.
In the story of Jesus feeding the 5,000, the disciples used what they had, and Jesus did a miracle. Just like when David brought his five stones and sling, God did a miracle through him.
4. Believing you've got what it takes is powerful.
A lot of us get caught up in doubts and comparing ourselves to others. We need to focus on God's voice and His call for our lives.
Some of us forget how God's helped us in the past. Take time to remember the cool things God's done for you. Stop comparing yourself to others and focus on the gifts God's given you. You've got what it takes to win.
This week, identify one "giant" in your life. Then, think about what "stones" you already have that can help you face it.
Let's pray together.
God, help me see what I've got and give me the guts to face my challenges. Give me a win this week. Amen.
1. What are some gifts God has given you?
2. How can you use these gifts to overcome challenges in your life?
3. Can you think of a time when you tried to be someone else instead of using what you already had?
4. How can remembering past victories help you face current challenges?
5. How can you block out the 'white noise' of doubts and comparisons?
