All That Singing In Church: What's That About?
Contributed by John Pierce on Jan 18, 2006 (message contributor)
Summary: A message addressing some basic issues surrounding the singing part of worship.
Open:
Ask people why we sing in church… have them share in just a few words. Should we sing more… less… more hymns… more upbeat songs… do we need an electric guitar… full drum set going… maybe some rapping.
All over our country… really all over the world… the singing in church is seen differently. This morning it is my hope that you will be challenged by what the word says and what the Holy Spirit speaks to you in your own heart.
It is about God. (focus)
Phil 2
9Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
SO WHAT?
This means it doesn’t matter what the songs are… only that we focus on the one who matters… no you… but Him, God.
It is about us thanking God for all things. (praise)
Psalm 13
5 But I trust in your unfailing love;
my heart rejoices in your salvation.
6 I will sing to the LORD,
for he has been good to me.
SO WHAT?
We that him for the good – the blessings he gives us. We thank him that he has brought us through the difficult times.
It is about God being loved by us. (worship)
Mark 12
30Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.
SO WHAT?
The relationship was never intended to be one way. You may feel like you are missing that sense of feeling loved by Him. He wants you to feel that, but feeling that happens when we give love to Him… then we experience a different connection. (Example of saying you love someone, talking about it… and giving a hug, and receiving that hug returned.)
It is about us meeting God and our minds, hearts and lives being changed. (results)
Luke 24
51While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. 52Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.
SO WHAT?
When we encounter God we are changed, sometimes a little, sometimes a lot… but we are always changed. Some of you feel stuck… you are in your word, your are praying… let me suggest that you need to get outside your comfort zone and worship Him. Expect that the more honest you are with Him in worship, the more change will take place in your life.
Call to Action:
Find some time to worship… don’t miss out on Sunday morning worship.
