AGREEMENT

Matthew 18:19-20

19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

Introduction

I. Agreeing to “Walk Together”

Question: Amos 3:3 Can two walk together, except they be agreed?

A. This passage speaks of agreeing to “walk together.”

¥ Many have misinterpreted this to mean that two (or more) must walk in total agreement.

¥ We must walk in agreement to achieve a particular purpose or vision.

¥ The fundamentals or core principles and values of our faith need to be the same. (Jesus was born of a virgin, died on Calvary, rose again and is returning etc.)

B. Another way of saying this from the Strong’s Concordance is “to have an agreed upon appointment”.

¥ T3259 yaad — agree, make an appointment, a time, assemble selves, betroth, gather selves. A primitive root; to fix upon (by agreement or appointment); by implication, to meet (at a stated time), to summon (to trial), to direct (in a certain quarter or position), to engage (for marriage) — agree, (make an) appoint(-ment,a time), assemble (selves), betroth, gather (selves, together), meet (together), set (a time) (Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance)

Answer: Sure, If they have Godly love for one another (There are over 100 “one another Scriptures” in the Bible)

John 13:35 AMP - By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

II. Speak, Live and Conduct yourselves in Agreement with the Word of God

A. Be on guard that your words are in agreement with GOD’S WORD. You are justified

or condemned by your words.

Matthew 12:37 AMP - For by your words you will be justified and acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned and sentenced.

B. If the Word says it that settles it!

Psalms 119:89 LAMED. For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.

1 Peter 1:24-25 - AMP

24 For all flesh (mankind) is like grass, and all its glory (honor) like [the] flower of grass. The grass withers and the flower drops off,

25 But the Word of the Lord (divine instruction, the Gospel) endures forever. And this Word is the good news which was preached to you.

III. Living in Agreement

A. Living a life of harmony - The word agreement that Jesus uses in Matthew 18:19 can also be translated "to

harmonize" or "to make a symphony”.

¥ Working towards agreement takes work just like a beautiful symphony takes work.

¥ An acute attention to detail is necessary in order to flow in unity.

¥ Step by step, beat by beat, measure by measure and rest by rest… It’s all necessary to create harmony.

¥ Practice makes perfect.

¥ if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again!

B. Living in Harmony takes Effort!

1. 1 Corinthians 1:10 AMP - But I urge and entreat you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in perfect harmony and full agreement in what you say, and that there be no dissensions or factions or divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in your common understanding and in your opinions and judgments.

2. Romans 12:16 - AMP - Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty (snobbish, high-minded, exclusive), but readily adjust yourself to [people, things] and give yourselves to humble tasks. Never overestimate yourself or be wise in your own conceits.

3. 1 Corinthians 3:1-3 - AMP

1 HOWEVER, BRETHREN, I could not talk to you as to spiritual [men], but as to nonspiritual [men of the flesh, in whom the carnal nature predominates], as to mere infants [in the new life] in Christ [unable to talk yet!]

2 I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not yet strong enough [to be ready for it]; but even yet you are not strong enough [to be ready for it],

3 For you are still [unspiritual, having the nature] of the flesh [under the control of ordinary impulses]. For as long as [there are] envying and jealousy and wrangling and factions among you, are you not unspiritual and of the flesh, behaving yourselves after a human standard and like mere (unchanged) men?

4. 1 Corinthians 11:18-19 - KJV

18 For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it.

19 For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.

5. 2 Corinthians 13:11 NIV - Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.
