Immanuel Baptist Church, Wagoner, OK

Rick Boyne

Message Point: Don’t let the revival simply be an “event” in your life! Let God revive your heart!

Focus Passage: Luke 9:57-62

Supplemental Passage: 'THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME. 'BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.'" (Matthew 15:8-9 NASB)

Introduction: So, we’ve had a revival. A revival is two separate things, I think. The first thing is the event. For weeks, we’ve planned the services, made huge outreach efforts, had guest speakers and concerts and even baptisms. That’s all the event. The revival actually started when people felt the need to pray and began to do so. The revival actually started when people realized that the revival wasn’t just the event, but something spiritual. And, more importantly, the revival isn’t over just because the event is through. The revival is meant for believers. It is to revive us. It is to stoke our spiritual fires. It is to renew the joy of our salvation. It is a spiritual B-12 shot that that energizes us and encourages us to continue to do the things that we know we are supposed to do! But there is danger, too. We can make decisions without counting the cost. We can be deterred from our newfound excitement and new commitments by listening to those who have NOT been revived.

I. Being Excited (Not counting the cost)

a. I’ll follow you anywhere!

b. Jesus knew what following Him would entail. He knew He was basically on a 3 year camping trip.

c. "Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. "For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if he has enough to complete it? (Luke 14:27-28 NASB)

II. Fulfilling Obligation (Not wanting to make a change)

a. Let me first bury my father (excuse)

b. Jesus knew that perceived familial obligations would overwhelm the man’s decision

c. "If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple. (Luke 14:26 NASB)

III. Seeking Permission (Not doing what you are called to do)

a. Let me say goodbye to friends and family

b. Jesus knew that the man’s decision would be subject to judgment from the man’s family and friends.

c. 'THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME. 'BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.'" (Matthew 15:8-9 NASB)

Application/Call to Obedience: What promise have you made to God that you have conveniently forgotten about due to getting busy or distracted. Jesus told the Church at Ephesus, 'But I have this against you, that you have left your first love.’ (Revelation 2:4 NASB) Don’t let the promise or vow you have made to God become stagnant. ACT upon it! Perhaps you’ve never repented and put your faith in Jesus Christ. The Bible says, “that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.” (Romans 10:9-10 NASB)
