Today, we turn our attention to the book of Ephesians, specifically chapter 4, verses 13-15. It is in these verses that we find profound insights into our spiritual growth and advancement. The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Ephesians, writes:
"Until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ."
In these verses, we see a clear distinction between advancement and growth, a call to determine our current spiritual position, and a promise of divine assistance.
The esteemed theologian, Francis Schaeffer, once said, "In this life I can never say, ‘I have arrived; it is finished; look at me—I am holy.’"
So, as we unpack these verses today, let us remember that it is not by our power, but by the power of the Holy Spirit, that we grow and advance in our faith.

Dear Heavenly Father, we come before you today with humble hearts, grateful for the gift of Your Word. In the realm of faith, it is often easy to conflate the ideas of advancement and growth. They may seem synonymous, but a closer look at the scriptures reveals a nuanced difference between the two.
Advancement, in the context of our spiritual journey, refers to the forward progression in our understanding of God's Word, our commitment to His commands, and our ability to live out the principles of our faith in our daily lives. It is about moving from one level of spiritual maturity to another, about deepening our relationship with God, and about becoming more Christ-like in our thoughts, words, and actions.
The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Ephesians, makes a clear distinction between these two aspects of our spiritual journey. He calls us to strive for both - to advance in our faith and to grow in our knowledge of Christ.
The first aspect of this distinction that Paul highlights is the idea of unity in faith. This is not just about agreeing on the basic tenets of Christianity, but about having a shared understanding of who Christ is, what He has done for us, and what He expects from us. It is about being of one mind and one heart in our commitment to Christ and our desire to live out His teachings.

The second aspect that Paul highlights is the knowledge of the Son of God. This is not just about knowing the facts about Jesus - His birth, His life, His death, and His resurrection. It is about knowing Him personally, about having a relationship with Him, about experiencing His love, His grace, and His power in our lives.
The knowledge of the Son of God is a gift from God, given to us through the Holy Spirit. It is a gift that we need to receive with humility, with gratitude, and with a commitment to live in accordance with the truth that we have received.
The third aspect that Paul highlights is the idea of maturity. This is about becoming more like Christ, about developing the character traits that He exemplified - love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Maturity is a process that requires the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. It requires us to cooperate with Him, to yield to His leading, and to allow Him to transform us from the inside out.
The fourth and final aspect that Paul highlights is the idea of attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. This is not just about knowing the facts about Jesus or about following His teachings. It is about becoming like Him in every aspect of our lives - in our thoughts, in our words, in our actions, and in our relationships.
Attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ is a goal that we can only reach with the help of the Holy Spirit. It is a goal that requires us to surrender our lives to Christ, to trust in His power, and to rely on His grace.
