Contributed by Carl Willis on Mar 20, 2007 (message contributor)
Summary: When the direction of God is clear we have a choice do we follow in obedience or simply ignore the call. This message examines the people’s response to the message of Haggai.
Active Obedience
Time to Rebuild – Part II
Haggai 1:12-15
Haggai 1:12 (NLT)
Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Jeshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the whole remnant of God’s people obeyed the message from the Lord their God. It had been delivered by the prophet Haggai, whom the Lord their God had sent, and the people worshiped the Lord in earnest.
The Choice to Respond
• A call to action
– Proclamation of God’s word
• The choices
– Listen
– Ignore
– Agree
– Reject
– Obey
Haggai 1:13(NLT)
Then Haggai, the Lord’s messenger, gave the people this message from the Lord: "I am with you, says the Lord!"
The Promise of Obedience
• Fear was the excuse for inaction
– Separation from the fullness of God
• Sin separates
• Omission is sin
• Obedience brings closeness
– Restoration of fellowship
– Shelter and security
Haggai 1:13 (NLT)
So the Lord sparked the enthusiasm of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, Jeshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the whole remnant of God’s people. They came and began their work on the house of the Lord Almighty, their God.
Fanning the Flames
• The spark of obedience
– Changes our confidence
– Changes our passions
– Changes our priorities
• The result of obedience
– Productivity
– Action
Haggai 1:15 (NLT)
This was on September 21 of the second year of King Darius’s reign.
Time to Respond
• Delayed obedience is still disobedience
• The people responded 23 days after Haggai’s first message
• When God gives direction He seeks your immediate response
