Message Point: God provided the sacrifice for us through Jesus.
Focus Passage: Genesis 22:1-14
Introduction: If we are looking at this to be the first in a 7 series sermon about Easter, why in the world are we starting back in the Old Testament? Well, first of all, the entire Bible points to Jesus. Second, we can see how this event was a shadow of things to come, where God tells us to trust Him, then provides for us.
I. Sin
a. All the way back to the beginning in the Garden of Eden
b. Sin caused a separation between God and mankind
c. Sin caused the first death; the animals which had their skins used to cover Adam and Eve
II. Sacrifice
a. God required a blood sacrifice to atone for sin
b. God told Abraham to take his only son, Isaac, to a place to sacrifice him
c. That place would later be Solomon’s Temple and some believe the very spot, the Holy of Holies
III. Salvation
a. At the last minute, after Abraham had obeyed, God restrained him from sacrificing Isaac
b. Abraham told Isaac that God would provide the sacrifice; and God did – through a ram
c. In the same exact way, God has also provided His own sacrifice for OUR sins, through Jesus
Application/Invitation: Have you trusted God for the sacrifice He made? Have you trusted Jesus? Are you trying to supply your own sacrifice when God’s has already been provided?
