A. INTRODUCTION
We now enter a new section of the book. Chapters 5-7 – the subject is: Jesus, High Priest of an Everlasting Covenant, superior to the Aaronic Priesthood. Bear in mind that the Hebrews were reared in an atmosphere of smoking altars, and you can understand how welcome this unfolding of the Priesthood of Jesus was to their distracted minds. Jesus, a High Priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek, doing away with human priesthood.
1. What is the ministry of Jesus as our High Priest? Sacrifices for sins (v. 1, cf. Titus 2:14; 1 Peter 2:24).
2. Because of their own sinful nature what did the priest have to do? Offer a sacrifice for his own sins (v. 3; cf. 7:27).
3. Even when the priest went into the Holy of Holies once a year, what did he have to do? Offer a sacrifice for his sin(s) (9:27).
4. Jesus did not have a sinful nature like those priest, how did He identify with us? Jesus was completely human (2:17).
5. In spite of His sinless perfection, what capacity has Jesus? Touched by our infirmities (4:15).
6. What Messianic prophecy does the author of Hebrews now point out? Eternal Priesthood of Christ (v. 6; cf. Psalm 110:4).
7. What is one reason the prayers of the Lord Jesus were heard? (v. 7). Supplication and strong crying.
8. What was the authors opinion of his reader? Spiritually dull and don’t seem to listen (v. 11, NLT).
9. The readers had been saved a long time (v. 12), but what was their problem? Needed teaching (v. 12).
10. What picture did the writer of Hebrews give about his readers? Baby who needed milk (v. 12-13).
11. What skills did believers have who ate solid food? Recognize the difference between right and wrong (v. 14).
If you have never really accepted Jesus as your personal Savior, would you do it right now? Do not delay or put it off. If you would like to receive Christ by faith, pray this simple prayer in your heart:
Dear Lord, I acknowledge that I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died for my sins on the cross, and rose again the third day. I repent of my sins. By faith I receive the Lord Jesus as my Savior. You promised to save me, and I believe You, because You are God and cannot lie. I believe right now that the Lord Jesus is my personal Savior, and that all my sins are forgiven through His precious blood. I thank You, dear Lord, for saving me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
If you prayed that prayer, God heard you and saved you. I personally want to welcome you to the family of God and rejoice with you.
