Psalm 105:1-6 A PSALM OF THANKSGIVING

A monk joined a monastery and took a vow of silence. After 10 years of silence was asked,

“Do you have anything to say?” “Food bad.” Another 10 years, “Bed hard.” Another 10 years, “I quit.” older monk replied, It's no surprise You’ve done nothing but complain since you got here

This Psalm was written on the return of the Ark from the house of Obed-edom

1. THE PRIORITY OF PRAISE - 1 O give thanks unto the Lord;

Praise is Expected, Praise is Expounded, Praise is Explained.

The LORD is Our Father, The SON Our Saviour, The SPIRIT Our Guide

2. THE PRIVILEGE OF PRAISE - 1 call upon his name:

The Request - Psalm 50:14 Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High: 15 and call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.

The Response - Psalm 116:17 I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the Lord.

The Result - Psalm 18:3 I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised:

so shall I be saved from mine enemies.

3. THE PURPOSE OF PRAISE -

TO REJOICE - 1 O give thanks unto the Lord;

TO REQUEST - 1 call upon his name:

TO REPORT - 1 make known his deeds among the people.

TO REFLECT - 5 Remember his marvellous works that he hath done; his wonders,

and the judgments of his mouth;

His Works, His Ways, His Wonders, and His Words.

4. THE PROGRESSION OF PRAISE

Praise - 1 O give thanks unto the Lord;

Prayer - 1 call upon his name:

Proclamation - make known his deeds among the people.

Preparation - 2 Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works.

(Our Heavenly Employ)

1 O worship the King all-glorious above, O gratefully sing his power and his love:

our shield and defender, the Ancient of Days, pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise.

5 O measureless might! ineffable love! While angels delight to hymn thee above,

The humbler creation, though feeble their lays, With true adoration shall lisp to thy praise.

A young man in a leper colony requested “Could we sing ‘Count Your Blessings’?”

The Singer Challenged “I suppose you’ll never sing the song again.”

He answered, “Oh yes---but I’ll never sing it the same way.”

4. THE PLACE OF PRAISE - In Our -

Worship - 1 O give thanks unto the Lord; call upon his name: make known his deeds among the people.

Witness - 2 Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works -

5. THE PROFIT OF PRAISE - It Brings

Recognition - 3 Glory ye in his holy name:

Revelation - 3 let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord.

Resignation - 4 Seek the Lord, and his strength: seek his face evermore

Reflection - 5 Remember his marvellous works that he hath done;

his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth;

Redemption - 6 O ye seed of Abraham his servant, ye children of Jacob his chosen.

6. THE POWER OF PRAISE - Luke 17:15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, ..... and he was a Samaritan. 17 Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? 18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. 19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.
