A PRAYER OF RESPONSE
2 Samuel 7:18-29
Introduction:
David decided that he was going to build God a Temple; but God said no. God told David that his son would be the person to build the Temple. So, how do you handle it when God says, “No”? This morning, we are going to study David’s prayer of response to God.
2 Samuel 7:18-21
Respond with…
1. Humility.
King David’s prayer posture was different than his normal. You may be thinking, “Who cares”? David’s physical posture shows his heart- He was ready to spend whatever amount of time in prayer as was necessary. David acknowledged that he had done nothing to deserve God’ favor. His family background was not a family of Kings or of fame; and yet God was promising an everlasting Kingdom from his family line.
David referred to himself as God’s servant 10 times in this prayer. He humbled himself before God. When you pray, you should be humble. You have done nothing to deserve God’s salvation from eternal punishment; but He offers you salvation anyways. “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up” (James 4:10). Be a faithful servant in all that you do. Don’t forget that David’s prayer is after God has told him no. Be humble.
2 Samuel 7:22-24

2. Honor.
David honored God by talking about God’s greatness. God is sovereign- He is in control of all things. David praised God that He had chosen Israel as His chosen people. There are many examples of how God had taken care of His people. We should praise God for all that He has done for us.
2 Samuel 7:25-29

3. Hope.
God told David how He was going to bless his family line forever. This eternal promise gave David reason to continue serving God- God gave him hope. David believed that God’s promise would be fulfilled. God has given us the same hope through Jesus. Our hope of eternity with Jesus is what should push us forward when we are struggling. Set your hope in Jesus. David wanted God’s will to be done.
Conclusion:
When you pray, don’t forget Who you are speaking to. Be humble and thank God for all that He has done. Place your trust and hope in Jesus.
