“A Place For Us”

John 14;1-9

David P. Nolte

There are many elaborate, ornate, huge mansions around the world; for

example: the Pittock Mansion The Hearst Mansion

Graceland Mansion J.D. Rockefeller mansion

All of these, however ornate, costly, extravagant and famous will turn to

rubble. Here today, gone tomorrow.

We have all seen houses drop into the sea when the rains and winds and

tides erode the foundations. We have seen million dollar homes go up in

flames. Some have been flattened by hurricanes or earthquakes.

Just living in a mansion does not guarantee a happy or healthy life. Some

of the worst crimes have been committed in a mansion.

But there is good news. We can have an indestructible mansion. Jesus

said, “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in

Me. In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would

have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare

a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where

I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you

know." Thomas said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where You are

going, and how can we know the way?" Jesus said to him, "I am the way,

the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from

now on you know Him and have seen Him." Philip said to Him, "Lord,

show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us." Jesus said to him, "Have

I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who

has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, 'Show us the

Father'?” John 14:1-9 (NKJV).

The theme, if you have missed it, is “Mansions” When we consider the

mansions to which Jesus refers, there are some truths we ought to know.

I. OUR MANSION WILL BE A PREPARED PLACE:

A. “In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I

would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.”

1. Jesus Himself is preparing it. We will for sure enjoy it

because He has us in mind while the preparation is

accomplished.

2. And we can be confident He will do it! He would not

kid us or have us cherish a pipe dream, or indulge a vain

hope.

B. The song reminded us of the certainty of our future prepared

home:

“In my father's house are many mansions.

If it were not true He would have told me so.

He has gone away to live in that bright city;

He's preparing me a mansion there I know.”

C. It is a prepared place for prepared people. As Matthew Henry

commented, “If He has prepared the place for us, He will

prepare us for it, and in due time put us in possession of it.”

1. Prepared people are believing people: Jesus said, “You

believe in God, believe also in Me.”

2. Prepared people are those who know Jesus, “Philip said

to Him, ‘Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient

for us.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you so

long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip?’” John

informs us, “By this we know that we have come to

know Him, if we keep His commandments. The one

who says, ‘I have come to know Him,’ and does not

keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in

him.” 1 John 2:3-4 (NASB).

3. Prepared people are those who are bonded to Jesus by

faith: He said, “No one comes to the Father except

through Me.” To come through Him we must be in Him

and He in us! How do we get in Christ?

a. Paul said, “Or do you not know that all of us who

have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been

baptized into His death? Therefore we have been

buried with Him through baptism into death, so

that as Christ was raised from the dead through the

glory of the Father, so we too might walk in

newness of life.” Romans 6:3-4 (NASB).

b. “For all of you who were baptized into Christ

have clothed yourselves with Christ.” Galatians

3:27 (NASB).

c. “Because of Christ and our faith in Him, we can

now come boldly and confidently into God’s

presence.” Ephesians 3:12 (NLT).

D. Marlene likes a prepared place at home. When we are

expecting company, she is hustle-bustling to get the place

prepared: no shoes in the living room; no dishes in the sink,
