A Name Which is Above Every Name
Philippians 2:9-10; Hebrews 1: 1-3 Monte T. Brown
April 26, 2009 Sunday Morning
Heart O’ the Hills
Introduction
This Morning I would like to share with you a message that was inspired from three verses in Hebrews 1, verses 1-3, a message titled; “A Name Which is Above Every Name.”
The Gaithers wrote a song that says it best.
There just something about that NAME.
1 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets,
2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;
3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, Hebrews 1:1-3
When the Old Testament saint, while reading the Bible, would come to the name, LORD (Jehovah) they viewed it as so holy, they would not speak it.
They would substitute another name for God or most often simple replace it speaking the words, THE NAME.
When writers and preachers of the New Testament spoke of THE NAME, the Jewish congregations knew exactly whom they were speaking of.
If you would please turn with me to our main text which is Philippians 2:9-10, please stand and in doing so we honor the written Word of God.
Scripture
9Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; Philippians 2: 9-10
Prayer
A Name Which is Above Every Name.
I. Is a Comforting Name
Acts 4:10 says; "Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole."
Whatever the needs are in your life they can be meet in His NAME.
Take the name of Jesus with you,
Child of sorrow and of woe;
It will joy and comfort give you,
Take it then where’er you go.
A Name Which is Above Every Name.
II. Is a Strengthening Name
Luke 10:17 says; "And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name."
There is POWER in His name.
At His NAME demons flea.
By His NAME, prayers are answered.
For His NAME angels stand in wait to do His bidding.
In the NAME of Jesus Kingdoms have been built, armies have been destroyed.
Because of the NAME of Jesus even the wind and waves are subject to His voice.
He can calm the storm and set the captive free.
At the NAME of Jesus, not only are sins forgiven but also, they are removed to be remembered no more.
At the NAME of Jesus, drunks become sober, thieves become trustworthy.
At the NAME of Jesus, drug attics, prostitutes, and murderers become model citizens.
Because of His NAME, someday graves are going to split wide open and the dead are going to live.
We, which are alive and remain, will be changed by the power of His NAME and we will be reunited with saved loved ones and friends who have gone before.
For then shall be written, O death where is thy sting, O grave where is thy victory, for even death and the grave are subject to His NAME.
All hail the power of Jesus’ name,
Let angels’ prostrate fall;
Bring forth the royal diadem,
And crow Him Lord of all.
A Name Which is Above Every Name.
III. Is a Revealing Name, That God has Highly
Exalted
In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare asks the question - What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.
American History renders some great names, Washington, Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Billy Sunday and Billy Graham, but none can compare with name of JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD AND SAVIOR.
Matthew 16:13-16 says; 13"When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?
14And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
15He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
16And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God."
To the artist He is the One Altogether Lovely.
