Running the Race -A Look at the race

Heb 12:1-4

I. The race of life requires good spiritual shape: Lay aside

excess baggage.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily hinders our progress. Heb 12:1a

Remember that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize. You also must run in such a way that you will win. 25All athletes practice strict self-control. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. 26So I run straight to the goal with purpose in every step. I am not like a boxer who misses his punches. 27I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified. 1 Cor. 9:24-27 (NLT)

II. The race of life is a marathon: Run with endurance &

perseverance

And let us run with endurance the race that God has set before us. Heb 12:1b

And everyone will hate you because of your allegiance to me. But those who endure to the end will be saved. Mark 13:13 (NLT)

III. The race of life is not run alone: Keep your eyes on

Jesus

We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, on whom our faith depends from start to finish. Heb 12:2a

IV. The race of life is meant to be won: Run for the prize

He was willing to die a shameful death on the cross because of the joy he knew would be his afterward. Now he is seated in the place of highest honor beside God’s throne in heaven. Heb 12:2b (NLT)

Remember that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize. You also must run in such a way that you will win. I Cor 9:24

V. The race of life is not for quitters: Keep the faith.

Think about all he endured when sinful people did such terrible things to him, so that you don’t become weary and give up.4After all, you have not yet given your lives in your struggle against sin. Heb. 12:3-4 (NLT)
