The comforting promise of Jesus preparing a heavenly home for us and His constant presence in our lives.
Good morning, church family! Today, we're diving into a passage of hope, comfort, and promise from the Gospel of John. We're going to talk about the home Jesus is preparing for us, the comfort of His ever-present love, and the hope we have in eternal life.
As Sally Clarkson once said, "Every day in each inch of space, each rhythm of time, each practice of love, we have the chance to join God in coming home, in living so that we make a home of this broken and beautiful world all over again." And there is no greater joy than knowing that Jesus is preparing a home for us in heaven, and that His presence is always with us.
Let's read John 14:1-4 together:
"Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going."
Let us pray.
Father God, we come to you today with grateful hearts, thankful for the promise of a home in heaven and the comfort of Your presence. Open our hearts and minds to receive Your word today. Use it to comfort, challenge and change us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
So, sit back, take a deep breath, and let's dive into the richness of God's promises for us.
The promise of a home in heaven is one of the most comforting and profound promises Jesus makes to His followers. It's a promise that transcends the temporal and physical limitations of our earthly existence, offering us a glimpse into the eternal and divine.
Given a promise: Jesus, in His infinite wisdom and love, knew the anxieties and worries that would plague His disciples after His departure. He knew the world would be a place of trials and tribulations, and so He gave them, and us, a promise to hold onto. He assured us that He is going to prepare a place for us in His Father's house. This is not just any place, but a heavenly home, a place of eternal rest, peace, and joy.
A state of being: It's about being in the presence of God, living in His love and grace forever. It's about the end of suffering, pain, and death. It's about life in its fullest, most beautiful form. This home is not something we earn or achieve, but a gift from Jesus, prepared out of His love for us.
A home with many rooms: This speaks to the inclusivity of God's kingdom. It's a home for all who believe in Him, regardless of their race, gender, or social status. This promise breaks down the barriers that divide us on earth, uniting us as one family in Christ.
Gives us hope: It gives us something to look forward to, a reason to persevere through the challenges of life. It reassures us that our earthly struggles are not in vain, but are part of a bigger picture, a divine plan that culminates in eternal life with Jesus.
Changes our perspective on death: Death is no longer the end, but a transition, a stepping stone to our heavenly home. It's a comfort to those who are grieving, a reminder that their loved ones are not lost, but are in a better place, a place prepared by Jesus Himself.
He will come back to take us to be with Him: This is a promise of His constant presence and guidance. He doesn't just send us off into the unknown, but personally escorts us to our heavenly home. This promise assures us that we are never alone, that Jesus is always with us, leading us, guiding us, and comforting us.
Pastor, here would be a good place to share a personal story about why this promise of a home in heaven has comforted you or given you hope in a difficult time.
