A GOOD EXAMPLE

3 John 1:1-15

Introduction:

Growing up, I heard from my parents often that I needed to be a good example for my brother. This morning, I want you to think about “role models”. We live in a World where people are looking for “role models”. Unfortunately, many of these “role models” are “Movie Stars” and “Super Star Athletes” that model evil. (I do realize that not all “Movie Stars” and “Super Star Athletes” are evil.) The Church is no different. The people in the local congregations ought to be imitators of Christ; but often times they look more like the devil. We all live as an example to those around us. Sometimes that example is good, and it helps those around you grow stronger in Christ. Sometimes that example is terrible, and it gives those around you a reason to grow hardened hearts against Christ. If you are active in your local congregation that is wonderful; but does your life draw others to worship with you or to run away as fast as they can? Our study in 3 John identifies 2 men of “good” example and 1 of “bad”. Through this study ask yourself, “Who am I more like, the “good” examples or the “bad”?

3 John 1:1-8

Am I like…

1. Gaius?

What did he do that made him an exemplary believer?

* He was faithful to the truth.

* He continued to walk in the truth.

* He worked together with other believers for the truth.

3 John 1:9-10

Am I like…

2. Diotrephes?

What did he do that made him such a problem?

* He gossiped maliciously.

* He refused to be hospitable.

* He was a control freak.

3 John 1:12

Am I like…

3. Demetrius?

What did he do that made him an exemplary believer?

* He had a good reputation within the congregation.

* He had a good reputation with God.

* He had a good reputation with believers outside of the local congregation.

Conclusion:

John sums up all 3 examples with 1 verse.

3 John 1:11

As Christians we are to imitate the things of God. Anything else falls short and leads to walking as a “bad example”. We must notice that Diotrephes was more concerned about being in charge and doing things his way than living as an obedient Christian. Diotrephes’ motto was, “My way or the highway”. Which description of these 3 men fit you best at most times in your life?
