Summary: Ecclesiastes 7
HONOR IS BETTER THAN LUXURY (7:1)
"A GOOD NAME IS BETTER THAN PRECIOUS OINTMENT” Here the Preacher is extolling the value of a good reputation.
YOUR DEATHDAY IS BETTER THAN YOUR BIRTHDAY (7:1b)
"THE DAY OF DEATH THAN THE DAY OF ONE'S BIRTH"
The day of one's death is better than the day in which they were born. Of course, this assumes one has first made a good name for themselves!
The writer looks at birth as the beginning of life’s sorrows. But for the righteous, the day of one's death is the beginning of eternal bless, entering peace and rest, being with the LORD and resting from labor.
A FUNERAL IS BETTER THAN A PARTY (7:2-6)
"BETTER TO GO TO THE HOUSE OF MOURNING THAN TO GO TO THE HOUSE OF FEASTING"
Everybody loves a party, but everybody needs to attend a
funeral!Our lives are not forever.
THE END IS BETTER THAN THE BEGINNING (7:8)
THIS IS SIMILAR TO WHAT WE HAVE ALREADY SEEN...
That the day of one's death is better than the day of one’s birth but the principle has application to more than just one’s overall life.
PATIENCE IS BETTER THAN PRIDE (7:8-9)
"THE PATIENT IN SPIRIT IS BETTER THAN THE PROUD IN SPIRIT"
Patience is a virtue to be pursued by the man of God.
THE PRESENT IS BETTER THAN THE PAST (7:10)
WE ARE NOT TO SAY "WHY WERE THE FORMER DAYS BETTER?”
memory often forgets the bad experiences. We may neglect present opportunities.
WISDOM IS BETTER THAN WEALTH
Riches do not profit one in a day of wrath
Wisdom gives life to those who have it - 7:12
Wisdom will make the best use of one's wealth as a defense
Wisdom will help one weather the storms of wrath
RESIGNATION IS BETTER THAN INDIGNATION
THERE ARE SOME THINGS WE CANNOT CHANGE...
God has His purpose, which we cannot change.
His purpose allows for both days of prosperity and adversity
