Summary: In this parable of the ten virgins Jesus speaks concerning the coming kingdom for the Jews, but there also are some practical truths for us all.

Parable of the Ten Virgins

Matt. 25:1-13

The last two parables in Matthew follow the questions asked by the disciples in Chapter 24:3. Here the Lord speaks of return and what He will find.

See: Matt. 25:1-13

1. The Ten Virgins

Vs.2 they are described as wise and foolish (5 each)

Mention: Matt. 7:24-26 The wise and foolish builders

Here the difference between being wise or foolish has to do with having oil in their lamps. Ref. Vs.3-4

Vs.5 We are told that while the bridegroom tarried they all slumbered and slept.

Note: The reason for why they are sleeping is because of the hour. Vs.6

“Behold the bridegroom cometh”

See: Vs.7-10 We are told that the virgins arose, but only the wise had oil in their lamps.

Key: Oil is symbolic of the Holy Spirit

See: Leviticus 8:12

And: Hebrews 1:9

Then: 1 John 2:27 The anointing abide in you

Note: Here is what we mean when we say a parable is a story that gives a divine truth, but may not all be doctrinal.

Point: You cannot buy the Holy Spirit Vs.9

See: Luke 12:35-38 Let your loins be girded about and your light burning

See: Vs.10-13

“Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh”

See: Matt. 24:36, 42

Point: This is a picture of the second coming of Christ at the end of the tribulation period.

Thought: It is perceived by most that read this passage that it is pertaining to ten women, but the word virgins also references men.

Several Things:

• This parable in following the last one in Chapter 22 is concerning Christ return to judge the house of Israel.

Matt. 24:1-51 Speaks of the end of the tribulation period known as the 70th week

Jewish Wedding Custom: it was customary for the bridegroom to return from the house of the bride in a procession to his own home where a wedding banquet would take place.

Point: At the end of the tribulation Jesus will return with His bride the Church. The Jews in the tribulation will be invited guests.

See: Luke 13:22-30 When ye shall see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and the prophets

• We will see later that the judgment of the Gentiles are in Vs.31-46

See: Vs.32 all nations

There is a sobering practical truth here that is taught:

• In the Church everyone look alike

Matt. 25:1 we are told they were ten virgins and each had lamps. Today in the Church we all look alike because we cannot see if someone has the Holy Spirit in them.

We have eaten and drunk in thy presence they said in Luke 13:26

• The Slumbering of the Church as a whole

See: Matt. 25:5 They all slumbered and slept

Mention: Matt. 13:25 while men slept his enemy came…

• Not everyone that professes to be a Christian will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven

See: Luke 13:26-27
