Summary: Let us strive to be empathetic Christians, enhancing our fellowship and usefulness to the Master.

As members of the Body of Christ, we are called to a deeper level of connection with one another. Empathy is a vital aspect of this connection, allowing us to understand and enter into each other's feelings. In 1 Corinthians 12:26, the apostle Paul writes, "If one member suffers, all the members suffer with it." This command grows out of the doctrine that the church is one, with one interest, and therefore, we should have common sympathy in its joys and sorrows.

Demonstrating Empathy

The Bible provides numerous examples of individuals demonstrating empathy. We see this in:

1. Neighbors and friends of Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist, rejoicing with her (Luke 1:58).

2. Barnabas rejoicing with the church at Antioch (Acts 11:23).

3. David mourning with his sick friends (Psalm 35:13-14).

4. Jesus weeping with the family and friends of Lazarus (John 11:33-35).

5. Paul expressing concern for weak and stumbling brethren (2 Corinthians 11:29).

6. Christians showing compassion to brethren in prison (Hebrews 13:3).

Developing Empathy

To become empathetic Christians, we must submit to the transformation that comes by renewing our minds (Romans 12:1-2). This involves developing graces such as:

1. Being kindly affectionate to one another in brotherly love (Romans 12:10a).

2. Giving preference to one another in honor (Romans 12:10b).

By developing the mind of Christ, we will be characterized by virtues such as:

1. Doing nothing through selfish ambition or conceit (Philippians 2:3).

2. Lowliness of mind, esteeming others better than ourselves (Philippians 2:3).

3. Looking out for the interest of others (Philippians 2:4).

The Mind of Christ

Having the mind of Christ is essential for true empathy. As Philippians 2:1-2 states, this leads to:

1. Consolation in Christ

2. Comfort of love

3. Fellowship of the Spirit

4. Affection and mercy

5. Fullness of joy

Conclusion

God's will is for Christians to be a people who rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep. By developing the mind of Christ and being transformed by the renewing of our minds, we will become empathetic Christians, useful in sharing the joy and comfort of Christ with others. Simple sympathy is not enough; we must understand and enter into one another's feelings. Let us strive to be empathetic Christians, enhancing our fellowship and usefulness to the Master.
