Who Can Become God's Children?

John 1:11,12 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.

Purpose: An inspirational message. This message should be preached as an offer to become identified with the children of God as follower of Jesus Christ.

How to introduce: People seek to define themselves by the people they identify with. In any public school, students become parts of groups. Often, they become part of the group that accepts them. In so doing, they adopt the values and behaviors of the others in the group. Adults also define themselves by the groups that accept them. But, there is a group that offers you the chance to identify yourself with God and who accepts you because you want to follow Jesus Christ. You are being given the opportunity to adopt the values and behaviors of those who seek to be like Jesus.

I. Jesus was an Outsider

a. He obligated himself to come as as the Messiah of the Jewish people. They rejected him as an outcast. When he refused to conform to their attitudes and behaviors, and when he refused to leave, they killed him. That freed up the opportunity for people who were not Jews to become the children of God.

a. He decided to accept all people who receive him. The gospels declare who he is, what he values, and what his followers will believe and do. If you admire him, and you want to be like him, then all you have to do is join him.

III. You Have the Right to Belong

a. In case someone has tried to convince you otherwise, Jesus has given you the right to become a child of God. A right means you have legal permission to do something. Some groups will add some conditions to belonging, but Jesus doesn't do that. He gave you the right to follow him. The only condition is your choice to admire and follow him.

How to conclude this message: You cannot be identified with a group more honorable than with those who are followers of Jesus Christ. This is a group that is not devoted to changing others, but conforming to the values and behaviors of Jesus Christ. They are a group who trusts God to transform our character into that of God himself. This is an opportunity for the hearer to belong.
