Summary: Jesus perhaps in His longest public speaking unto those who were following Him speaks concerning what we call the "Beatitudes".

The Sayings of Jesus Part 1

Matthew 5:1-12

As we have considered the walk of Jesus carefully learning how we should walk in this present world. We must also consider His sayings and the Sermon on the Mount in which we find the Beatitudes is the key to proper Christian living.

Mention: Matt. 4:17 Repent the kingdom of heaven is at hand

The word “Disciples” here is referring to the multitudes

Mention: John 10:10 I am come that you might have life and that you might have it more abundantly.

Vs.2 He opened His mouth and taught them saying,

Listen carefully to what Jesus says. Blessed… 9 times Jesus uses this word

Now the world will tell you that to be blessed you must:

• Be Wealthy

• Be Popular

• Be Powerful

But Jesus comes along and says just the opposite!

See: Vs.3 Blessed is the poor in spirit…

“Poor in spirit” This is when one truly recognizes his or her spiritual state

Isaiah 6:5 Woe is me for I am undone, because I am a man of unclean lips

Luke 5:8 Depart from me I am a sinful man

See: Luke 18:9-14

Point: It’s hard to see your spiritual condition if you are always mindful of others.

This is where happiness begins because you cannot inherit the kingdom of heaven without acknowledging your true spiritual condition. This is also the launching pad for the blessings of God.

Vs.4 Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted

Listen: When you recognize your spiritual condition it should cause you to grieve.

Luke 18:13 God be merciful to me a sinner

There is a problem with the heart when sin is view as a source of happiness and not grief.

Vs.5 Blessed are the meek…

Mention: Matt. 11:29 for I am meek and lowly

Mention: Numbers 12:3 we are told Moses was very meek

The word meek means strength under control and it also carries the meaning of being teachable.

See: Prov. 25:28

Jesus in all the power He possessed submitted Himself to the sufferings of the cross.

Vs.6 blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness

The only standard of righteousness the people knew at this time was that taught by the Scribes and Pharisees.

See: Matt. 5:20

This is the thirst and hunger (desire) for what is right in the sight of God

Mention: Matt. 6:33 seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness

Mention: Romans 10:3 Israel being ignorant of God’s righteousness established their own righteousness.

Jesus in given these Beatitudes understood that if we are going to live a blessed life the work must first begin INTERNALLY before anything can be sustained externally.

7 "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

8 "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

10 "Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 "Blessed are you when men cast insults at you, and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, on account of Me.

12 "Rejoice, and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
