Week 10: “Rejected by Man While Glorifying God” (Mark 6:1-6)

All of us in here at one time or another have been rejected. Maybe you felt rejection as being the last kid on the playground picked for a sport, maybe you remember mustering enough courage to ask a girl out for her only to tell you no. Maybe at one time you applied for a credit card or bank loan and for whatever reason the answer that came back was not a positive one. Many of in here have been told that we were not good enough, smart enough, tall enough, mechanically inclined, or talented enough to do something. Yes we all have been rejected, felt rejected, or will be rejected. A couple things about rejection I hope we all can agree on; it is inevitable for it to happen, it does not feel good, and we have rejected others. When it comes to rejection though, we are in good company because even Jesus Christ was rejected. So today I am going to minister, and teach from this though, “Rejected by Man, While Glorifying God.” We are going to look at how Jesus was rejected, why He was rejected, what He did about it, why we should be thankful when we are rejected, and how to use rejection to Glorify God.

Jesus has just come from bringing Jairus’ twelve year old daughter back to life and going to Nazareth

This is the second time Jesus goes home to preach the first is in:

Luke 4:14-27

14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.

15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.

16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,

18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.

21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

22 And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?

23 And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.

24 And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.

25 But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;

26 But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.

27 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian.

Mark 6

1 And he went out from thence, and came into his own country; and his disciples follow him.

2 And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands?

3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.

Among the ancient Jews, every father was bound to do four things for his son.

1. To circumcise him.

2. To redeem him.

3. To teach him the law.

4. To teach him a trade.

4 But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.
