What Can God Do And Cannot Do? Series

Good morning brothers and sisters, welcome to today’s prayer meeting. I wish to share you some thoughts with you regarding prayer.

If the Bible is true and Jesus is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. Why do we hear so few testimonies of notable and significant miracles happening?

The formula is a simple one:

Bible Promises + Jesus God + Prayer by Us = Miracle.

May I suggest that there is no problem with the Bible Promises or with God? So, the problem lies with us or our faith, because we will only pray for what we can believe God to do. In other words, we set a limit on God what he can or cannot do. And we limit God up to the ceiling of our own faith. Are there not situations we experienced in the past, they were very bad, but we did not even pray? We say something like, this situation is the end of the road or that this situation is dead. Why do we even bother to pray if God cannot do anything about it?

This morning I desire to encourage to grow and increase in our faith in God.

Let me summarize a few miracles in quick succession,

1) In the gospel, at the wedding feast in Cana (Jn 2:1-12). During the celebration and feasting, an emergency arose because the wine ran out. Mary told the servants to take instructions from Jesus. And he told them to fill the wine jars with water. Doesn’t this sound strange to you? Imagine that you are one of the servants, will you listen to a carpenter and take water to fill them up? Knowing that the content will be given to the guests to drink? You know that you will be also responsible because they will complain they are served with water. But on this occasion, Jesus turned the water into wine.

2) In Joshua 10:12-14, Joshua commanded the Sun to stand still. And it did. How can the sun stop moving and stay in the same position for half a day? Will you pray that the sun be stopped for half a day? Do you believe God can still do something like that today if there is a necessity?

3) In Lk 8:49,50 a synagogue ruler named Jairus was bringing Jesus home to heal his daughter who was very sick. While they were still on the way, a servant brought the news that Jairus’ daughter had died. “Don’t trouble the teacher anymore, the girl is dead”, he said. What he meant was “It is the end”. There is nothing that anyone can do able it. Not even Jesus or God.

But Jesus told Jairus, “do not be afraid, only believe” (Lk 8:50). And the girl was brought back to life.

What if Jairus had repeated those same words? “Jesus, my girl is already dead. I don’t want to bother you, please don’t come anymore. No one, not even you or God can do anything now.” What if Jairus did that? Then he would not get back his daughter alive.

Dear brothers and sister, I encourage you to bring your impossible situation to the Lord in prayer. Do not make up your mind that it is impossible for God to help you. What is the end of the road to us, is not necessary “the end” in the Lord’s eyes. Let God have the final say. There is nothing that God cannot do to help or deliver us.

Remember the Sunday School song which some of us used to sing. There is so much truth in it.

Let’s hear what it says:

My God is so big, so strong and so mighty

There’s nothing my God cannot do

The mountains are His,

The valleys are His,

The stars are His handiwork too

There’s nothing my God cannot do.

Finally, I wish to share three scriptures to lay a foundation for answered prayer:

A) Mk 11:24 “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” We must pray believing and leave the outcome to God.

B) Ps 34:7 “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desire of your heart.” This speaks about the condition of our hearts. We must always place the Lord as our first love, and remove all idols in our lives. Do not let anything to take the special place that the Lord has in our hearts.”

C) Matt 6:33 “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added to you.” This is a good reminder to set out our priorities right. We must put God and his agenda before our own agenda.

Let us hold on to these truths as we pray to God for the miracles we need.
