Priscilla Lesson 6 Series

A. INTRODUCTION: FAITHFUL IN AN OCCUPATION

1. Her husband’s name Aquila is Jewish, her name is Gentile.

2. Did Pricilla have a cross culture marriage? Did she assume the Hebrew faith?

3. Aquila and Priscilla were urban dwellers, not rural or small town.

4. Children are never mentioned.

B. PRISCILLA’S SEVEN STEPS TO FAITH

1. Priscilla had faith to cross two cultural/religious boundaries. First into the Jewish religion, and second was Christian faith.

a. Aquila was his Latin name, acquired from Aquila Pontius in Italy his home. His Jewish name unknown, Priscilla was thought to be Gentile.

b. They were free, not slaves.

c. They were saved when Paul arrived in Corinth. Did he move into their home before they were saved? Paul lived and worked with them because they were tent makers, just as he was” (Acts 18:3, NLT).

2. Priscilla was a business woman.

a. The business identified with both.

b. Aquila probably supervised the workers. Priscilla met the public.

3. Priscilla used her home to entertain Paul, later a church.

a. Paul taught them so well, later they could teach Apollos (Acts 18:24 ff).

b. Church in their home. “Greet Priscilla and Aquila ministry co-workers . . . also give my greeting to the church that meets in their home” (Rom. 16:3-5, NLT).

4. Priscilla, the faithful leader of the family in ministry.

a. Her name mentioned first when ministry was involved (Rom. 16:3, 2 Tim. 4:19, Acts 18:26). Aquila’s name first in business (Acts 18:1).

b. They (she) taught Apollos. “Priscilla and Aquila . . . took him aside and explained the way of God even more accurately” (Acts 18:16, NLT).

Apollos Not A Christian

Knew only the baptism of John (v. 25)

Needed explanation (v. 26)

Apollos a Believer

Knew the Scriptures (v. 24)

Had been taught the way of the Lord (v. 25)

Taught about Jesus with enthusiasm and accuracy (v. 26)

Knew only the baptism of John (v. 25)

c. What John the Baptist didn’t include. Holy Spirit, grace not law, in Christ, baptism look back, justification, etc.

5. Priscilla faithfully moved continually.

a. Left Pontius after marriage (18:1) for business reasons.

b. Driven out of Rome, 52 AD by Claudius Caesar due to persecution.

c. Left Corinth for Ephesus, then Rome, ministry.

6. Faithful in suffering.

a. In Rome different persecution. “Give my greetings to Priscilla and Aquila, my fellow workers in ministry . . . risked their lives for me” (Rom. 16:3-4, NLT).

b. Don’t know the occasion. Could be Acts 18:7-17 when church was persecuted in Corinth.

If you have never really accepted Jesus as your personal Savior, would you do it right now? Do not delay or put it off. If you would like to receive Christ by faith, pray this simple prayer in your heart:

Dear Lord, I acknowledge that I am a sinner. I believe Jesus died for my sins on the cross, and rose again the third day. I repent of my sins. By faith I receive the Lord Jesus as my Savior. You promised to save me, and I believe You, because You are God and cannot lie. I believe right now that the Lord Jesus is my personal Savior, and that all my sins are forgiven through His precious blood. I thank You, dear Lord, for saving me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
