SERIES: Miracles with a Message #6
TITLE: What the Blind Man Saw
TEXT: John 9:1-7
INTRO: Shortly after the Feast of the Tabernacles in the early fall of 29A.D. Jesus and His followers were entering the temple area when they saw this man who had been blind from birth. He was outside the temple entrance doing the only thing blind people could do for a living back then, begging.
Today, we come to the 6th Sign Miracle in John. Let's look at:
I. WHAT JESUS SAW
A. As He was walking along on this particular day, Jesus saw this blind man. The Lord noticed him and gave him His attention. He stooped down in front of the man, spat on the ground, made a “poultice” of sorts out of the dirt and placed it on the man’s eyes and told him to go and wash in the Pool of Siloam. The man did as instructed and instantly he could see!
B. Jesus Saw Things Others Couldn't See
1. He saw Zaccheus up in a sycamore tree & gave him new life
2. A Widow who gave everything she had to God
3. Little children, and He said, "... Whosoever shall not receive
the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter
therein." (Luk 18:17)
4. He saw the disciples in fear & stilled their storm
5. This day, He saw a man born blind and gave him sight
II. WHAT OTHERS SAW
A. The Disciples Saw Only a Puzzling Question (v.2)
B. The Crowd Couldn't Comprehend the Miracle (vs.8-9)
C The Pharisees Were Spiritually Blind
1. God did a miracle that day! But all the Pharisees could see
was that someone had broken their Sabbath laws (v.16)
2. They were blind to their own spiritual blindness.(v.40)
D. The Man's Parents Evaded the Question (vs.20-21)
II. WHAT THE BLIND MAN SAW (8-12)
A. This Man was Blind from Birth
1. He had felt the wind and the rain on his back
2. He had heard people's voices as they passed by
3. But, he had never seen the beauty of God's creation
4. He had never seen the faces of his loved ones
B. But, one day, he saw Jesus:
1. He first saw Him as a MAN called Jesus (v.11)
2. Then he saw Him as a PROPHET (v.17)
3. Finally he saw Him as the LORD (v.38)
# Mark Lowry wrote:
"Mary did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a
blind man? ... The blind will see, the deaf will hear and the dead will live again. The lame will leap, the dumb will speak, the praises of the lamb.”
CONCL: When his sight was restored, the man who had been born blind said: (v. 25b) "... one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see."
# After his conversion, John Newton wrote a hymn that is probably the best known and loved hymn ever written:
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me,
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see
Today, ask God to open your eyes to His great love and miraculous work in your world!
Amen
