14 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. Heb 2:14-15 (NKJV)

Introduction:

How many times do we greet each other with the obligatory, How are you doing¨ and then we hear back the familiar refrain - I’m fine! There are many times when we SAY we are fine when we are not fine! Physically we just don’t want to complain so we say I’m fine. Kind of like

Farmer Joe who decided his injuries from the accident were serious enough to take the trucking company to court. In court, the trucking company’s fancy lawyer was questioning farmer Joe. "Didn’t you say, at the scene of the accident, I’m fine?" questioned the lawyer.

Farmer Joe said, "Well I’ll tell you what happened. I had just loaded my favorite mule Bessie into the..." The lawyer interrupted and said, "I didn’t ask for any details, just answer the question. Did you not say, at the scene of the accident, I’m fine!" Farmer Joe said, "Well I had just got Bessie into the trailer and I was driving down the road..."

Once again the lawyer interrupted and said, "Judge, I am trying to establish the fact that, at the scene of the accident, this man told the Police that he was just fine. Now several weeks after the accident he is trying to sue my client. I believe he is a fraud, so would you please tell him to simply answer the question."

By this time the Judge was fairly interested in Farmer Joe’s answer and said to the lawyer, "I’d like to hear what he has to say about his favorite mule Bessie." Joe thanked the Judge and proceeded, "Well as I was saying, I had just loaded Bessie, my favorite mule, into the trailer and was driving her down the highway when this huge semi-truck and trailer ran the stop sign and smacked my truck right in the side.

I was thrown into one ditch and Bessie was thrown into the other. I was hurting real bad and didn’t want to move, and I could hear ole Bessie moaning and groaning and I knew she was in terrible shape.

Shortly after the accident a Policeman came on the scene and he could hear Bessie moaning and groaning so he went over to her. After he looked at her he took out his gun and shot her between the eyes.

Then the Patrolman came across the road with his gun in his hand and looked at me. He said, "Your mule was in such bad shape I had to shoot her. How are you feeling?" And judge it was right then and there that told that policeman, "I’m fine!"

So often today, we truly believe we are just fine, walking through life, seeking to meet our own desires and pleasures! But in truth, this morning there no need for you to continue to lie to yourself and say I’m fine! This is because we are not fine. We have ALL been touched by death, because of sin!

Sin is a plague on humanity that is brought about by our own selfish desires and self-centered nature. It is because of sin that we are separated from God it is that separation from our Creator that leaves us in anxiety and constantly searching and seeking for something to satisfy our hearts but no matter where we look, we are met with only temporary success at best!

Sin has our souls in bondage, and it is in this bondage that we remain until we come to know Jesus as Savior, and it is at that point that we are rescued from the bondage of sin and the death it brings rescued by Christ our Savior rescued by the Good News of the Gospel of Christ!

This morning I want us to look at Heb 2:14-15 and see just HOW Jesus delivers from the bondage of sin and death

Jesus¡¦ humanity and death was real (v.14):

Why did God take on flesh? Why did Jesus have to die? These are 2 questions that we find many people asking here the writer of Hebrews in his efforts to clarify salvation and the wonderful deeds of Jesus answers those questions!

If we read v.14 without some idea of what has already been discussed in this chapter one may be confused but here the writer of Hebrews informs his readers that the children he has spoken about in v.13 children in this verse represent those who place their faith and trust in Jesus
