THE BIRTH OF CHRIST

THE MESSIAH BORN

Luke 2:7-17

INTRO: This is the final sermon in the series on the Birth of Christ. Today, we are going to look at the birth of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

I. REVIEW.

A. Joseph and Mary in Nazareth.

1. Micah’s prediction.

2. Caesar’s decree.

3. God’s timing.

II. THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF JESUS BIRTH.

A. The word to the shepherds.

1. Luke 2:11.

2. Shepherds didn’t count for much in society.

3. First word is to the shepherds.

4. God has chosen the poor (1 Cor. 1:26-27).

5. The shepherds had faith (Luke 2:15b).

a. Which is come to pass--not shall come to pass.

b. The same faith led the way for them to go to the stable.

B. Announcement came to Herod.

1. Much later than to the shepherds.

2. His reaction is very different.

a. He looked upon Jesus as his rival.

b. Trouble with Rome.

C. The wise men find Jesus.

1. Their joy at the news of Jesus’ birth.

2. Knelt before Jesus.

3. Warned in a dream.

III. JESUS BIRTH IS SIMPLE.

A. Quietly and simple.

1. World knows nothing of his birth.

2. Palace knows nothing.

B. Made know to a chosen few.

1. Micah the prophet.

2. Simeon--wouldn’t see death until he saw the child--a promise

made by God (vv. 25-32).

C. Born a Saviour and a King.

1. Jesus is born a Saviour.

a. Announcement made to the Shepherds.

b. A Saviour for all mankind.

2. Jesus is born a King.

a. Announcement made to the kings of the east.

b. King of the world.

3. Jesus’ goal is known in advance.

D. The fullness of time (Gal. 4:4). The nation as a whole didn’t

receive Jesus--just as today.

1. A universal language.

a. Alexander the Great had conquered the Orient 300 years

before the birth of Christ.

b. He brought the Greek language to all of the known world.

c. Everyone using Greek--easy to spread the gospel.

2. The world was at peace.

a. This was necessary for spreading God’s Word to all man

kind.

b. People could travel freely. They could proclaim the gospel

openly.

3. The birth of Jesus came at a peaceful time.
