INTRODUCTION:
This portion of 2 Kings 4 introduces us to a noble woman from Shunem. She perceived that Elisha was not just a traveller, but a holy man of God. Rather than simply feeding him occasionally, she chose to make room for him in her home—building a small upper chamber with a bed, table, chair, and lampstand. That act of honour opened the door to a divine visitation that rewrote her story of barrenness.
Her hospitality and spiritual discernment provoked a prophetic reward. Though she had no child and had not asked for one, God granted her a miracle through Elisha’s declaration. Later, when the child died unexpectedly, her faith and tenacity in seeking Elisha again brought about resurrection and restoration.
This teaching reveals that when we make room for the presence and purposes of God, He fills our lives with what we didn’t even think to ask for. Honour, discernment, and persistent faith are keys to birthing the miraculous.
1. SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT OPENS THE DOOR TO DIVINE VISITATION
The Shunammite woman recognised Elisha as a holy man of God.
a) Not every opportunity is ordinary—some carry divine potential
She discerned that Elisha was a vessel of God and treated him accordingly (2 Kings 4:9).
b) Those who perceive spiritually can access what others miss
Discernment is the difference between visitation and transformation.
c) Recognising God’s presence in people unlocks divine favour
She didn’t just host a man—she hosted a mantle.
d) Many miss destiny moments due to spiritual blindness
What you fail to honour, you cannot receive from.
Biblical Example: The disciples on the road to Emmaus only realised Jesus’ identity when He broke bread (Luke 24:30-31).
2. MAKING ROOM FOR GOD ATTRACTS UNEXPECTED BLESSINGS
She built a physical space, and God filled it with spiritual reward.
a) The room was a prophetic statement of welcome and honour
She wasn’t just generous—she was spiritually intentional (2 Kings 4:10).
b) God does not overlook those who honour His presence and servants
Elisha asked, “What shall be done for her?” (v.13).
c) Honour attracts divine attention, even when you don't ask
She didn’t request a child, but God responded to her honour (v.16).
d) The measure of your preparation determines the measure of your visitation
Where God finds space, He releases grace.
Biblical Example: Cornelius made room through prayers and alms, and heaven visited him (Acts 10:1-4).
3. GOD CAN GIVE WHAT YOU’VE STOPPED BELIEVING FOR
Her response to the promise revealed she had given up hope.
a) God knows the silent desires of our hearts
She said, “Do not lie to me” (2 Kings 4:16), meaning her hope was already dead.
b) No matter how long it’s been, God can revive dead dreams
What seemed forgotten was still in God's plan.
c) Divine timing always exceeds human limitation
Though barren for years, she carried the promise at the appointed season.
d) God’s word creates possibilities where nature says “impossible”
“For with God nothing shall be impossible” (Luke 1:37).
Biblical Example: Sarah laughed at the promise of a child in old age, but God fulfilled it (Genesis 18:12-14).
4. FAITH PURSUES GOD EVEN WHEN THINGS FALL APART
When the promised child died, she ran to the prophet, not to people.
a) The same God who gave the miracle is able to restore it
She refused to accept the death as final (2 Kings 4:22-23).
b) True faith refuses to settle for loss without divine counsel
She said, “It is well,” even in grief (v.26)—a bold declaration of faith.
c) She bypassed Gehazi and clung to the one who gave the word
Only Elisha could deal with what he had declared.
d) Faith that refuses to let go receives resurrection power
Her persistence brought Elisha to her house—and life returned.
Biblical Example: The Syrophoenician woman persisted despite rejection and received healing for her daughter (Matthew 15:21-28).
5. GOD HONOURS PERSISTENT FAITH WITH COMPLETE RESTORATION
Elisha’s prophetic act brought the boy back to life.
a) Elisha stretched himself over the boy—symbolising total spiritual engagement
He prayed, paced, and pressed into the supernatural (2 Kings 4:33-35).
b) Spiritual miracles require focused intercession and prophetic persistence
Elisha did not give up until the child sneezed seven times—full restoration.
c) God responds to honour and faith with resurrection power
The woman received her son again—alive and whole.
d) What looked dead came back to life because someone refused to quit
Persistence in God’s presence brings impossible turnarounds.
Biblical Example: Jairus’ daughter was raised because her father believed, even after hearing, “She is dead” (Mark 5:35-42).
CONCLUSION:
The Shunammite woman’s story teaches that when you create room for God in your life, your home becomes the site of divine miracles. Her honour, discernment, and persistent faith opened doors that money, power, or position could never have accessed. She didn’t just receive a son—she experienced resurrection, a deeper intimacy with God, and lasting legacy.
