Summary: This sermon explores our absolute dependance upon God for our salvation.
You Can’t Make It, Stop Trying!
Galatians 2: 11-21
1. It is impossible for you to live a life worthy of our Lord’s favor (15-17).
A. It seems that we so often think that if we are just
good enough God will love us.
B. You cannot be justified by anything you do (obeying the law).
C. The Bible tells us (vs. 16) that no one is justified by obeying the law.
D. Romans 3:11 tells us, “There is no one righteous, not even one…”
E. We must present ourselves before God as one in need of mercy.
2. Christ died that we might have God’s favor despite our unworthiness (18-20).
A. Paul tells us that returning to the law is not an
option for him.
B. The purpose of the law was to show us the
sinfulness of our lives.
C. The good news is that there is a righteousness
apart from the law (Romans 3:21).
D. This is not to say we are to live a life free of
constraint (Romans 6:1-2).
3. To enjoy such a life, we must die and allow Christ to live in us (20-21).
A. Here are the basics to a successful, fulfilled
Christian life:
i. Be Crucified (to destroy the power of).
ii. Stop living.
iii. Allow Christ to live in you.
iv. Never, never set aside the grace of God.
B. To assume you can gain righteousness through
the law means that Christ died for nothing.
