Galatians 4 – Sons and Slaves

Galatians 4:1-7 NIV

What I am saying is that as long as an heir is underage, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate. 2 The heir is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. 3 So also, when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces of the world. 4 But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. 6 Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.

We’re Sons and Daughters and not slaves.

Why is this so important?

How does a slave live?

Slaves feel they really don’t belong.

Slaves feel their worth is based on their performance.

If they perform well, they have a place and if they don’t, they’re punished.

Slaves are sensitive to any criticism, real or imagined, because they believe someone is going to take their spot.

Slaves see God as a master to impress, not a Father to love.

How does a son live?

Sons believe they belong.

Sons want to be producers not performers.

Sons feel corrected. Slaves feel punished.

Luke 3:21-22 NIV

“When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased."

Jesus was 30 years old when this happened.

The Father told him he was pleased before he had done anything.

Jesus didn’t have to prove himself to his Father.

“I love you and I’m proud of you”

Right after this baptism, Jesus spent 40 days in the desert being tempted by Satan.

Luke 4:3 NIV

The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.”

Jesus could overcome temptation because he was sure of his sonship.
