Almost everyone has a story about someone that they knew who was a great faith influence in their life.
A grandma or grandpa.
A mom or dad.
A person whose faith was so giant, so influential, that it literally outlives them.
You saw them love, you heard them pray, you saw them keep going through Jesus’ power when they should have been discouraged and quit.
You saw their prayers answered,
saw them stay kind in the middle of conflict,
saw them fight for what they believed,
saw them stay consistent when others were giving up,
saw them take a bad situation and believe God in the middle of it,
saw them take lemons and make lemonade. =)
I heard one person talk about how their grandma was such a woman of prayer that you’d hear her praying all the time. She said she’d often visit, then back out of the driveway, and she would look back and see her Grandma’s lips moving, and know she was praying.
My grandma was such a woman of faith… God would answer her prayers, would talk with her… she raised 6 kids, missionaries, pastors, Bible teachers… poor as anything, but they all know Jesus…
Here’s what I want to focus on today.
Who is doing that for your generation?
Who is the person of great faith for your generation?
Sometimes, Faith dies at generation change points.
The children of Israel faced a situation like this:
1. There’s a mission for every generation to fulfill.
Joshua 1:1 After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, the LORD said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses' aide:
2 "Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them-- to the Israelites.
The faith of the last generation is useless if the next generation doesn’t pick it up.
God says, “The guys you looked up to your whole life – yeah, well, they’re not here now. You’re it.”
2. There’s a promise for every generation to believe.
3 I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses…
5 No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.
God didn’t promise your experience would be just like someone else’s. He just promised that the relationship would be the same – I will be with you like I was with them.
Think about Moses –
• Burning bush
• Red sea parted
• 10 plagues
• Giving the law
• 40 days on the mountain with God.
Joshua had none of that.
Your circumstances will be different – the battles you face will be different, but the GOD you face them with IS THE SAME!
Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
3. There’s a danger for every generation to face.
6 "Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them.
7 Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.
8 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.
9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go."
Courage. What is that?
Courage is just faith with a sword in its hand.
4. There’s a time for every generation to move – NOW!
10 So Joshua ordered the officers of the people:
11 "Go through the camp and tell the people, 'Get your supplies ready. Three days from now you will cross the Jordan here to go in and take possession of the land the LORD your God is giving you for your own.'"
When it’s time to go…. GO!
How to activate your faith:
• Set yourself a _____deadline_______. “three days from now”
• Start taking practical ___steps______. “get your supplies ready”
• Face the __big____ challenges. “you will cross the Jordan”
• Do the ___next___ thing. “you will cross the Jordan here”
• Tell what God’s ___done__ for you. “the Lord is giving you for your own."
