Have you ever encountered someone who seemed friendly and approachable, but beneath their charming smile lay a heart full of hatred and jealousy? The Bible warns us about such individuals, and in this sermon, we’ll explore the characteristics of these masked enemies and how to identify them.
1. The Smiling Deceiver (Psalm 28:3–5)
Do not be deceived by a friendly face, for it may hide a heart full of malice. David warns us about those who speak with flattering lips but have wicked intentions.
2. The Green-Eyed Monster (Proverbs 27:4)
Jealousy is a powerful emotion that can drive people to madness. Be cautious of those who exhibit excessive envy or resentment towards your success or blessings.
3. The Hidden Enemy (Matthew 7:15–20)
Jesus teaches us to beware of false prophets who appear as sheep but are actually wolves in disguise. Be aware of those who pretend to be friends but have ulterior motives.
4. The Slanderer (Psalm 101:5)
Watch out for those who speak evil against others, for their words can be poisonous. Slanderers often hide behind a smile while spreading rumours or gossip.
5. The Flatterer (Proverbs 29:5)
Flattery can be a weapon used to manipulate others. Be cautious of those who excessively praise you, as they may have hidden agendas.
6. The Two-Faced (Matthew 26:47–50)
Judas Iscariot’s betrayal of Jesus is a prime example of a two-faced individual. Be aware of those who pretend to be friends but secretly plot against you.
Remember, a smile can be a powerful disguise. Be cautious of those who exhibit hatred and jealousy behind their smile. Trust your instincts, and don’t be afraid to set boundaries or distance yourself from such individuals. As Proverbs 4:23 advises, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.”
Let us pray:
Lord, help us to discern the intentions of those around us and to guard our hearts against hatred and jealousy. May we be wise and cautious, yet always ready to extend love and forgiveness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
