THE SYMBOLISM OF NUMBERS
IN THE BOOK OF THE REVELATION
Note: For a study of the symbolic meaning of numbers see W. A. Criswell, Expository Sermons on Revelation, Volume 1, pp. 56-84. Study the following materials which give Biblical illustrations of what seem to be symbolic uses of numbers.
ONE UNITY AND INDEPENT EXISTENCE
(Deu 6:4 NIV) Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.
(Zec 14:9 NIV) The LORD will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one LORD, and his name the only name.
(Mark 12:32 NIV) "Well said, teacher," the man replied. "You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him.
(Eph 4:4 NIV) There is one body and one Spirit-- just as you were called to one hope when you were called--
(Eph 4:5 NIV) one Lord, one faith, one baptism;
(Eph 4:6 NIV) one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
TWO ADDITION, INCREASE, HELP, CONFIRMATION, FELLOWSHIP, STRENGTH, WITNESS, TESTIMONY
(Eccl 4:9 NIV) Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work:
(Eccl 4:10 NIV) If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!
(Eccl 4:11 NIV) Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone?
(Eccl 4:12 NIV) Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
(Deu 17:2 NIV) If a man or woman living among you in one of the towns the LORD gives you is found doing evil in the eyes of the LORD your God in violation of his covenant,
(Deu 17:3 NIV) and contrary to my command has worshiped other gods, bowing down to them or to the sun or the moon or the stars of the sky,
(Deu 17:4 NIV) and this has been brought to your attention, then you must investigate it thoroughly. If it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done in Israel,
(Deu 17:5 NIV) take the man or woman who has done this evil deed to your city gate and stone that person to death.
(Deu 17:6 NIV) On the testimony of two or three witnesses a man shall be put to death, but no one shall be put to death on the testimony of only one witness.
(Deu 17:7 NIV) The hands of the witnesses must be the first in putting him to death, and then the hands of all the people. You must purge the evil from among you.
(John 8:15 NIV) You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one.
(John 8:16 NIV) But if I do judge, my decisions are right, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me.
(John 8:17 NIV) In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two men is valid.
(John 8:18 NIV) I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me."
(Rev 1:5 NIV) and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood,
(Rev 3:14 NIV) "To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation.
(Mark 6:7 NIV) Calling the Twelve to him, he sent them out two by two and gave them authority over evil spirits.
(Luke 10:1 NIV) After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.
(Mat 18:15 NIV) "If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over.
(Mat 18:16 NIV) But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ’every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’
(Mat 18:17 NIV) If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector.
(Mat 18:18 NIV) "I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
(Mat 18:19 NIV) "Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.
