Realationships Series
Contributed by Jerry Mckee on Sep 18, 2008 (message contributor)
Summary: It’s tough to be a teenager today. I wrote this series of messages for our new 7th graders graduating into teenage life. Teenagers today are very relational. In this lesson we take a contrast what the Bible and the World have to say about relationships
Opening thoughts: Relationship websites, everyone wants to be in a relationship
I. Introduction
a. God made us to be relational people
i. Our relationships should honor God
ii. Broken relationships can hinder our relationship with God
23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there
rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; 24 Leave there thy gift before the
altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy
gift. – Matthew 5:23-24
b. You only get out of a relationship what you put into it
i. You have to be real all the time
ii. Our relationship with God should be the most important of all
II. Your Relationship with Your Parents
a. The World’s View – Parents are friends not authority figures
b. The Bible’s View – Honor your parents because that’s what God wants you to do
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. 2 Honour thy
father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) 3 That it may be well
with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. 6 Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers;
but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart – Ephesians 6: 1-3, 6
i. Parents aren’t perfect – Allow them to fail occasionally
ii. We must honor our Parents and Bible says we will have a long life.
III. Your Relationship with Your Siblings
a. The World’s View – Hate each other
b. The Bible’s View – Love One Another
This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. –
John 15:12
IV. Your Relationship with Others
a. The World’s View – Friends are disposable
b. The Bible’s View – Our relationship with our friends should not compromise our
relationship with God
14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what
fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with
darkness? 15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth
with an infidel? 16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the
temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I
will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17 Wherefore come out from among them, and
be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,
18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord
Almighty. – 2 Corinthians 6:14-18
Final Thought: The secret to trying to change your relationships is to make attempts to
love them just like Jesus loves you.
