Summary: We must use the teachings of Matthew 28:19-20 to spread God’s message not only to those around us, but to all nations.

Purposeful Mission

May 15,2005

One of the purposes of the church is to take the message of Christ to those who have never heard. It is our responsibility to share with others the good news of Jesus.

Today, we are going to look at a passage of scripture that teaches us why we should go and share Jesus with others. Then we are going to share with you two ways that Countryside is directly involved in this task.

“Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20 (NLT)

The Formula for Purposeful Mission

1) “Go”

God calls us to willingly abandon our agenda for his.

It is an instruction to purposefully go and share Jesus in new places.

2) Make “disciples”

The word disciple is literally translated teach.

We are instructed to teach others how to follow Jesus.

“But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard of him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them?” Romans 10:14(NLT)

3) “of all the nations”

The word “nations” means every people group.

It is where we get our word “ethnic”

This tells us that the gospel of Christ is for all people.

4) “Baptizing them”

Baptism is the first step of obedience for followers of Christ.

Baptism is a public declaration of what Jesus has done in your life.

5) “Teach these new disciples to obey”

The life of following Christ is one of obeying his word.

It takes time to learn and grow in knowing Christ. Our job is to instruct new believers in what it means to obey.

“Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you are a listener when you are anything but, letting the Word go in one ear and out the other. Act on what you hear!” James 1:22 (The Message)
