Exodus 3:13-14
13 And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?
14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said , Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
John 8:57-59
57 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
59 Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by .
Introduction:
Psalm 90:2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God.
We live in time and space. It is linear.
God is Eternal.
Eternity can be described as going forward & backward with no ending.
Eternity is in perpetual direction having no beginning and no ending!
This is where God dwells. This is what God is.
1. I AM speaks to His Eternal Nature
“Before Abraham was, I am.”
This description being in the present tense...
Abraham had a duration
We have a duration
“When I was young” or “When I was a child”
But what God “IS” He still “IS” and “IS TO COME”
He was, He Is, He Is to come...
Revelation 1:8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come , the Almighty.
There is no time when He began
There is no time when He will end
It’s not He will be... Because that is to say that He is not yet that thing... I AM -- HE IS!
He’s the First and the Last, but He IS!!
2. Man Cannot Comprehend Eternity
Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NIV) He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end.
Methuselah - 969 years
3. God Exists Outside of Time
2 Peter 3:8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
Peter commenting on the return of God...
A year in the life of man = 365,000 years to God
70 years in the life of man = 25.5 M years to God
And yet this is just a human comparison by God to communicate what time is in relation to Him.
Yet still there’s no proportion between our time & God’s eternity!
Years and days can really only measure duration of the created!
Job 36:26-30
26 Behold, God is great, and we know him not, neither can the number of his years be searched out.
27 For he maketh small the drops of water: they pour down rain according to the vapour thereof:
28 Which the clouds do drop and distil upon man abundantly.
29 Also can any understand the spreadings of the clouds, or the noise of his tabernacle?
30 Behold, he spreadeth his light upon it, and covereth the bottom of the sea.
Daniel 7:9 I beheld till the thrones were cast down , and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire.
He is much older than measured time!
God’s Eternity Revealed In Creation
Romans 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen , being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
4. Psalm 90
This Psalm is a prayer of Moses
Psalm 90:3-6 (Complaint of Human Frailty)
3 Thou turnest man to destruction; and sayest , Return , ye children of men.
4 For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past , and as a watch in the night.
5 Thou carriest them away as with a flood ; they are as a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which groweth up .
