Summary: There’s nothing more helpless than a newborn baby. There’s no one weaker than a mom who has just given birth. That’s how this story begins – two frightened teenagers in a barn with a God baby.
Christmas Eve 2021
Luke 2:1-10 NIV
In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 3 And everyone went to their own town to register.
4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.
8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.
1. He became vulnerable for the helpless.
There’s nothing more helpless than a newborn baby.
There’s no one weaker than a mom who has just given birth.
That’s how this story begins – two frightened teenagers in a barn with a God baby.
2. He was born in obscurity for the forgotten.
Jesus is always looking for the overlooked.
Bethlehem was a forgotten town to the Romans.
No one went to Bethlehem, and no one talked about Bethlehem.
God has a habit of finding people living in obscurity.
Story of Samuel anointing David, the shepherd.
3. He became human so we could know God.
He was born from a woman.
He grew up.
He became tired and hungry.
He was abandoned by his friends.
He was falsely accused.
He died a real death.
1 Timothy 2:5-6 NIV
“For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all men — the testimony given in its proper time.”
Jesus represents us to God and God to us.
If we want to know God, we look at Jesus.
Jesus came to an unusual place, to an unusual people and in an unusual way.
