Genesis Chapter Twenty-Eight Series

Summary: These are thoughts on Genesis Chapter Twenty-Eight. In his work, "What does every Bible chapter say..." John Hunt gives an overview of each chapter of the Bible. It is my intention to do the same thing here.
GENESIS CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT OVERVIEW
Overall what is happening in this chapter is that Jacob prepares to leave his parents and is directed to take a wife from the daughters of Laban his uncle. On his journey Jacob has a dream of a ladder reaching to heaven.
Thomas Coke (1801) – Genesis 28
Isaac directs his son Jacob to take a wife from the family of Laban. Jacob sees in a dream a ladder reaching up to heaven, with the angels of God ascending and descending upon it. Awaking from sleep, he admires the vision, and vows the tenth to God.
Joseph Benson (1857) – (Genesis 28)
We have here,
(1) Jacob’s parting with his parents to go to Padan-aram; the charge his father gave him, (Genesis 28:1-2), the blessing he sent him away with, (Genesis 28:3-4), his obedience to the orders given him, (Genesis 28:5-10), and the influence this had upon Esau, (Genesis 28:6).
(2) Jacob’s meeting with God, and his communion with him by the way. And,
1, His vision of the ladder, (Genesis 28:11-12).
2, The gracious promises God made him, (Genesis 28:13-15).
3, The impression this made upon him, (Genesis 28 16-19).
4, The vow he made to God upon this occasion, Genesis 28:20-22).
Matthew Henry (1708) – Genesis 28
We have here:
I. Jacob parting with his parents, to go to Padanaram; the charge his father gave him (Genesis 28:1-2), the blessing he sent him away with (Genesis 28:3-4), his obedience to the orders given him (Genesis 28:5, Genesis 28:10), and the influence this had upon Esau (Genesis 28:6-9).
II. Jacob meeting with God, and his communion with him by the way. And there;
1. His vision of the ladder (Genesis 28:11-12).
2. The gracious promises God made him (Genesis 28:13-15).
3. The impression this made upon him (Genesis 28:16-19).
4. The vow he made to God, upon this occasion (Genesis 28:20).
