Do You Have A Little Sometom Sometom

“ After these things Jesus went over the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. 2 Then a great multitude followed Him, because they saw His signs which He performed on those who were diseased. 3 And Jesus went up on the mountain, and there He sat with His disciples. 4 Now the Passover, a feast of the Jews, was near. 5 Then Jesus lifted up His eyes, and seeing a great multitude coming toward Him, He said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?” 6 But this He said to test him, for He Himself knew what He would do. 7 Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may have a little.” 8 One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, 9 “There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two small fish, but what are they among so many?” 10 Then Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. 11 And Jesus took the loaves, and when He had given thanks He distributed them to the disciples, and the disciples to those sitting down; and likewise of the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 So when they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the fragments that remain, so that nothing is lost.” 13 Therefore they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. 14 Then those men, when they had seen the sign that Jesus did, said, “This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world.” 15 Therefore when Jesus perceived that they were about to come and take Him by force to make Him king, He departed again to the mountain by Himself alone.

In Philly when someone asks you for a cup of coffee, you also hear them say, ‘And can I have a little sometom sometom.’ which means in Philly lingo, ‘Do you have something to eat to go along with the free coffee you are getting for me.’ Today, we are going to see how our Great Master and King can take a little sometom sometom and feed close to 10,000 people.

As I have mentioned there ere are seven signs described in John’s Gospel:

• The turning of water into wine (2.1-12).

• The healing at a distance of the son of the high official at Herod’s court (4.46-54).

• The healing of the lame man on the Sabbath (5.1-16).

• The feeding of the five thousand (6.1-15).

• The walking on the water of the Sea of Galilee (6.16-26).

• The healing of the man blind from birth (9.1-41).

• The raising of Lazarus (11.1-46).

Each of the ‘signs’ points to our Lord Jesus as either being the Messiah or is relative to His divinity. The fourth sign which we will look at today is the fulfillment of the common expectancy of ‘the Messianic feast’ as He gives them ‘bread from heaven to eat’. It also gives evidence of Jesus’ ability to feed men’s hearts as mentioned in verse 35 of chapter 6.

As you are aware, I like to look at other Gospels that cover the same incident that we are studying. Usually, Matthew, Mark, and Luke cover the events while John focuses more on our Lord Jesus Christ’s deity. In this situation, however, all the Gospel writers address our Lord’s feeding of the five thousand.

Before we take a look at these other version, I just want to mention to those of you who are just beginning to seek knowledge and understanding from God’s Holy word and that you avoid confusion, is that our Lord did the same thing again and was recorded by His disciples. In the second case He fed 4000. Now remember this also, in our Lord’s feeding of 5000, in reality He fed everyone who was there – men, women, and children. And, oh yea, don’t forget all our Lord’s followers also participated in the feast. So, to best understand these two events, you could say that it was the feeding of the 10,000 and the feeding of the 8,000. You would not be off in your logic. Or you also could call this occasion, the feeding of the thousands. Okay?

Matthew 14:13-21, “13 When Jesus heard it, He departed from there by boat to a deserted place by Himself. But when the multitudes heard it, they followed Him on foot from the cities. 14 And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick. 15 When it was evening, His disciples came to Him, saying, “This is a deserted place, and the hour is already late. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages and buy themselves food.”16 But Jesus said to them, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.” 17 And they said to Him, “We have here only five loaves and two fish.”18 He said, “Bring them here to Me.” 19 Then He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass. And He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples; and the disciples gave to the multitudes. 20 So they all ate and were filled, and they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments that remained. 21 Now those who had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.
