INTRODUCTION:
God has never stopped reaching out to His people. From the Garden of Eden to the Cross of Calvary, the heart of God has always longed for closeness with His creation. The invitation to draw near to God is not only a call to worship but a call to restoration, intimacy, and divine partnership.
Drawing near to God is more than religious activity—it is about relationship. It involves a conscious desire to walk with God, know Him, hear His voice, and align with His will. This invitation is open to all—regardless of their past, background, or failures. God desires fellowship more than formality.
In a world that is full of distractions, God is calling His children to step away from noise and draw close to Him. This drawing near is not a one-time action but a continual pursuit. The closer we get to God, the more of His glory, peace, wisdom, and power we experience.
1. GOD DESIRES INTIMACY WITH HIS CHILDREN
God created man primarily for fellowship, not just function.
a) He walked with Adam in the garden (Genesis 3:8)
God’s original intent was to commune personally with man.
b) He calls us into fellowship (1 Corinthians 1:9)
The Christian life is a divine relationship, not a religious routine.
c) He delights in closeness (Proverbs 8:17)
God reveals secrets and blessings to those who love and seek Him early.
d) He yearns for us jealously (James 4:5)
God is emotionally invested in our nearness to Him.
Biblical Example: Enoch walked with God consistently until he was taken up; this shows how God values intimate fellowship (Genesis 5:24).
2. DRAWING NEAR REQUIRES A PURE HEART AND SINCERE DESIRE
God responds to those who seek Him in truth and holiness.
a) Clean hands and a pure heart are required (Psalm 24:3–4)
You cannot approach God casually or carelessly.
b) God is near to the broken and sincere (Psalm 34:18)
A contrite heart draws the attention of heaven.
c) Sincere seekers find Him (Jeremiah 29:13)
Wholehearted pursuit brings definite discovery.
d) Drawing near demands repentance (James 4:8–10)
We must turn away from sin and pride to come closer.
Biblical Example: The prodigal son’s decision to return to his father was met with open arms—God always welcomes the returning heart (Luke 15:17–24).
3. DRAWING NEAR TO GOD BRINGS DIVINE BENEFITS
Closeness to God results in tangible spiritual and physical blessings.
a) God’s presence brings rest and peace (Exodus 33:14)
His nearness calms storms within and around.
b) Closeness brings clarity and direction (Psalm 73:28)
The nearness of God is good; it gives insight and purpose.
c) Nearness releases strength and joy (Nehemiah 8:10)
In His presence is fullness of joy and strength for life’s battles.
d) Those who draw near carry divine fire (Acts 4:13)
The apostles were recognised by their boldness—they had been with Jesus.
Biblical Example: Moses spent time with God on the mountain and came back carrying glory; nearness transformed his face and his leadership (Exodus 34:29–35).
4. THE INVITATION TO DRAW NEAR IS CONTINUAL AND URGENT
God’s arms are always open, but we must not delay.
a) Seek the Lord while He may be found (Isaiah 55:6)
There are seasons when access is urgent and time-sensitive.
b) Today is the day of nearness (Hebrews 3:7–8)
Delaying to draw near can lead to hardening of heart.
c) Daily pursuit keeps us fresh (Lamentations 3:22–23)
His mercies are new every morning for those who come daily.
d) Those who dwell in His secret place abide under His shadow (Psalm 91:1)
Ongoing intimacy secures divine protection.
Biblical Example: David constantly sought the face of God—morning, noon, and night. This kept him strong in battle and sensitive to God's voice (Psalm 63:1–2).
CONCLUSION:
God is always calling, always waiting, always reaching out for His children to draw near. No matter how far we have gone, how weak we feel, or how unworthy we may think we are—His invitation still stands: Draw near to Me, and I will draw near to you. The greatest reward in life is nearness to God.
The benefits are uncountable—peace, wisdom, strength, favour, protection, and above all, eternal satisfaction. Today, respond to that divine invitation. Don’t stay distant. Take a step. Lay aside distractions and draw near.
